Building Services Assistant (Recreational Sports)

Definition and Purpose

Under the supervision of the Coordinator - Facility Operations, the Building Services Student Assistant is responsible for maintaining a clean and sanitary Recreation Center for students, faculty, staff and guests.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 cumulative GPA at Cal Poly.
  • Experience in custodial methods and materials are preferred.
  • Ability to work in an atmosphere with little or no supervision and demonstrate time management skills.
  • Ability to be tactful and courteous to all associates and visitors; promptness and attention to duty are essential.
  • Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and those with special limitations or needs.
  • Able to work independently and demonstrate time management skills.
  • Ability to lift at least 40 pounds.
  • Previous maintenance or custodial experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Empty trash
  • Sweep and mop floors
  • Re-stock supplies in restrooms and locker rooms
  • Clean and sanitize countertops and restroom facilities
  • Wash walls, railings, doors and windows
  • Vacuum furniture and carpets
  • Hose outside patios and pool decks
  • Assist with swimming pool vacuuming as needed
  • Assist in moving furniture
  • Assist in the shampooing of carpets
  • Assist in the stripping and waxing of floors
  • Assist in minor maintenance projects as needed
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment
  • Report safety or maintenance needs in the Maintenance Log
  • Clean exercise equipment on a regular basis as scheduled with documentation
  • Follow opening and closing procedures with documentation
  • Perform custodial duties on an as-needed basis
  • Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and workshops
  • Provide quality customer service for all staff and customers
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management
  • Awareness of and appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity
  • Maintain prompt hours and follow absence procedures
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with staff and co-workers
  • Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures
  • Ensure a safe environment for all participants
  • Commitment to student development and leadership
  • Be neat, clean, tactful, cooperative, and courteous to all times

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.

Period of Employment

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Compensation and Hours

Pay Rate: $12.00 per hour; maximum 20 hours per week. Early morning, late nights, and weekend hours required.

Position Requirements
