191027 - Coordinator, Children's Services and Family Engagement 

Location CLP - Office of Programs and Partnerships  

Job Summary: The Children’s Services and Family Engagement Coordinator provides system-wide leadership for the identification, planning, delivery and evaluation of innovative, responsive, high-quality programs, services and outreach activities for children and families in Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh areas and throughout Allegheny County. The Coordinator is a leader in supporting families and developing outcomes for the success of children – providing access to spaces, materials, programs and activities that support literacy and the healthy social and emotional development of children.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensures a range of developmentally appropriate programs, services and activities to engage children and families in physical and virtual library spaces and throughout the community;
  • Prioritizes the development of library services and programs that seek to eliminate gaps in inequitable outcomes for children and families of color and all children and families facing inequities;
  • Coordinates Children’s Services staff committees, activities and programs;
  • Identifies and collaborates with other organizations in the community that serve children and families, acting as a representative for CLP and a children’s advocate in developing partnerships and providing training on library services to teachers and other youth serving adults;
  • Serves as an advocate for Children’s Services within the Library community by helping to develop and inform policies that consider the impact on children and families and ensuring those policies are communicated to all Library staff;
  • Provides strategic direction and supervision of the Early Learning Lead Librarian and BLAST staff and activities;
  • Ensures the application of the Library’s vision for equity, diversity and inclusion in services to children and families;
  • Develops and models standards of service for those serving children and families and evaluates performance of Children’s Specialists throughout the CLP system;
  • Coordinates professional development for Children’s Services staff throughout the CLP system, including meetings, training workshops, and branch visits and observations;
  • Proposes and develops projects for funding and manages multiple grants and endowments for special projects;
  • Prepares and manages Children’s Services operating budget, Children’s Summer Reading (District) budget and grant budgets.
Position Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university;
  • Five or more years of progressive experience and increasing responsibility in a public library, including significant experience working directly with children and families and developing appropriate programs and services;
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse public and staff, especially with children and their families;
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with community leaders, executives, elected officials and governmental representatives;
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and act upon data and trends in children’s services, both locally and nationally;
  • Ability to gain advanced knowledge of CLP policies and procedures and interpret them to the staff and the public;
  • Supervisory skills including people skills, analyzing staffing needs, and training and developing staff;
  • Knowledge of best practices in family engagement and learning, effective literacy and other programming for children and families;
  • Knowledge and commitment to best practices in equity, diversity an inclusion;
  • Knowledge of early literacy best practices and baby and child development and behavior;
  • Knowledge of Intellectual Freedom and privacy;
  • Knowledge of user-centered design principles;
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of reference and reader’s advisory services;
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License (or ability to obtain in reasonable time); ability to travel locally, regionally and nationally as required on an independent schedule;
  • PA State Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Criminal Record Check and Mandated Reporter Training required upon offer of employment.
Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  
Work Hours Salaried, full-time position with a base schedule of 37.5 hours per week, plus extended hours on evenings and weekends as scheduled or needed  
Salary $54,000 - $60,000 annually
