Summary:

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world's premier institution dedicated to the art and science of movies. Located at Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles, the Museum will be simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational, and entertaining. More than a museum, this dynamic film center will offer unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and moviemaking.

The Academy Museum is looking for an experienced Exhibitions Fabrication Manager to oversee exhibitions installation projects from conception to completion. This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. The ideal candidate will have excellent leadership skills, be well organized and have the ability to meet strict deadlines.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as primary liaison between external fabricator(s) and the museum until the museum opening.
  • Oversees external fabricators onsite while they install approx. 45,000 sq/ft of exhibit fit-out.
  • Liaises with the museum Operations department and exhibition fabricator to ensure delivery information is registered in a timely manner with General Contractor and on-site unloading and access is uninterrupted.
  • Ensures external fabricators' methods take into consideration the rotations and flexibility needed for future exhibitions.
  • Oversees the day-to-day progress of all ongoing fabrication projects.
  • Develops and leads technical drawings for new items.
  • Provides accurate and timely project estimates including material costing, labor planning, and budgeting, as well as making design decisions.
  • Maintains quality assurance.
  • Maintains relationships with vendors.
  • Assures product and process quality by testing methods; testing finished- product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes.
  • Assists with mock-ups onsite leading to the museum opening.
  • Creates and maintains the internal shop project schedules, fabrication shop material inventory list, shop tool inventory list, and internal shop task list.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor degree.
  • 4+ years in Design related field including Industrial Design, Engineer, Interior, and Furniture Design.
  • 5+ years of work experience in a similar industry (Tradeshow and Exhibit, Props, Cabinetry, industrial Designer).
  • Experience with Vector Works or other similar CAD programs preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Extensive knowledge of and proficiency in construction methods, techniques, materials, and applications.
  • Familiarity with all shop equipment and practices: hand tools, power tools, table saws, panel saws, routers, laminating, etc.
  • Understanding of construction techniques, familiarity with wood and composite wood substrates, acrylics, plastic laminates, adhesives, wood finishes, paints, basic metals and finishes, basic metal fabrication, and CNC machinery.
  • Ability to work safely in a variety of work conditions including an active construction site.
  • Ability to drive a forklift and use material-handling equipment (the museum will certify).
