Indian Child Welfare (ICW) Assistant / Visitation Specialist

OVERVIEW:

The primary purpose of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe (LEKT) Children and Family Services sc?´y'a?ca? Assistant / Visitation Specialist is to provide all levels of visitation to children and families as well as clerical support for sc?´y'a?ca? Case Managers.

POSITION STATUS: Full-Time Regular/benefits

SALARY LEVEL: Level

WORK SCHEDULE: 8 am to 6 pm, - Varies - Monday thru Friday, occasional weekends

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

The sc?´y'a?ca? Assistant / Visitation Specialist is responsible for supervising visits and providing a safe, secure environment, physically and emotionally, for children in alternate care by supervising visits with their natural parent(s) or other identified individuals either at the LEKT Social Services Building or another agreed-upon site. This individual maintains a flexible schedule with evening and occasional weekend hours (some evenings required).

This position will work closely with their supervisor, sc?´y'a?ca? Case Managers, caregivers, parents as well as collaborating with social services staff, other professionals in the community to ensure all visitation requirements and clerical/administrative support duties are being met in accordance with requests, court orders, Tribal, State and Federal Laws, as required.

  • Provides visits as outlined by the referral source which may include hands-on assistance and education (several times per week) to the family in an effort to meet goals.
  • Arrange visitation schedule and provide notification, in writing, to custodial, non-custodial parents or caregivers regarding visits.
  • Inform parents if they are to provide supplies, snacks or meals.
  • Schedule and provide transportation as outlined in the case plan.
  • Be available for flexible scheduling 7 days per week.
  • Participate in case conferences and court appearances upon request and as outlined in the case plan.
  • Monitor and provide safe visitation environment for children and terminate the visit if it is not deemed appropriate or parties involved display improper conduct.
  • Clearly define the rules of visitation with all parties involved and notify sc?´y'a?ca? Case Managers if rules are violated.
  • Assist clients and families who are having difficulty with a child.
  • Complete all necessary documentation in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate files with all necessary documentation regarding the family.
  • Transport clients to appointments (i.e. medical, dental, school, public assistance, treatment appointments, etc.)
  • Support foster parents, relative caregivers or suitable community placements by transportation children, maintaining the safety of the child at all times and documenting observations in a timely manner.
  • Report to and communicating with the assigned case managers verbally and in writing and participating in program trainings and meetings.
  • Assist in the compilation of monthly program statistics and reports
  • Assist in maintenance of file management systems

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Ability to maintain a cordial relationship with various departments of the organization for proper coordination of services.
  • Be willing to be supervised, accept constructive criticism when necessary and be willing to offer your ideas and suggestions to work as a team member.
  • Must be self-starter, team player, well organized and have detail oriented approach.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.), internet, fax, copier, printers, scanners and telephone.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new systems, techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks on time.
  • Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must pass a Child Protection Services Background Check
  • A minimum of two years of experience working in social services, court services, or child care agencies.
  • One-year experience working in a Native American community.
  • Knowledge of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe community, history and culture.
  • Competent working knowledge of the Indian Child Welfare Act.
  • Ability to be positive, enthusiastic and creative while coordinating a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to work well with people of all ages and cultural/economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to motivate others to participate in training, educational opportunities and other activities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively, either independently or cooperatively with others and to work a flex schedule based on the program needs.
  • Must pass UA testing prior to employment and submit random urinalysis upon request
  • Ability to adhere to LEKT Employee Handbook.
  • Capable of obtaining, within 30 days of employment: CPR/First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens, HIV/Aids training.
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation and insurance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMETNS

  • Capable of lifting 40 pounds or less
  • Capable of bending, kneeling, stretching, sitting for long period of time
  • Able to utilize visual acuity for extended time on computer

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe’s Drug Free Workplace policies and personnel policies.
  • Other duties as assigned relevant to job.
  • Must be able to travel for meetings, training, workshops when necessary, which may include out of state travel.
  • Unless documentation of the training can be provided, anyone hired for this position must participate in the following trainings:
