GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

In coordination with the Chief Executive Officer, the Vice President - Chief Lending Officer (CLO) will lead the Cornerstone Fund's outreach efforts to individuals, Local Churches, Associations, Conferences, Council for Health and Human Services Ministry organizations and other religious entities for the purpose of generating quality loans and investments. All of these efforts are governed by our overall fiduciary responsibility to protect the investments entrusted to the Fund. The Chief Lending Officer represents the Cornerstone Fund at various meetings and events, and acts as a subject matter expert on the uses of church property. Must be skilled in commercial lending, particularly real estate secured lending and constructing a 'capital stack' (financing program) which may include the use of tax credits and/or other forms of public/private financing. As an affiliated ministry of the United Church of Christ, the CLO supports the vision of the denomination as a multiracial, multicultural, open and affirming church, accessible to all, as it is lived out in and through the Local Church.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as Business Development Officer for Investments and Loans, securing investments into the Cornerstone Fund from individuals, Local Churches, Associations, Conferences and related entities; and soliciting loans from qualified borrowers across the UCC.
  • Serve as Chief Lending Officer (CLO). In this capacity, the CLO will be responsible for all lending activities of the Cornerstone Fund including but not limited to oversight of loan processing, underwriting, loan closing and the loan servicing operations.
  • Attend Conference, Association and Local Church meetings in order to advance the business development efforts of the Cornerstone Fund. As appropriate, meet with churches and organizations considering Cornerstone Fund loans.
  • Train, coach, counsel, and supervise Director of Lending and loan department employees. Act as owner of the Underwriting Guidelines and periodically refresh same.
  • Work with the President and CFO/COO in establishing a realistic Business Plan with measurable business development goals for investments and loans.
  • Deliver Presentations and Workshops to share knowledge of Financial Management, Building Project Management or Community Development initiatives.
  • Work in concert with other financial ministries including but not limited to, the Church Building and Loan Fund, United Church Funds, the Insurance Board and the Pension Board. Additionally interact with members of other Church Extension Funds and other denominations.
  • Attend Board and Executive Committee meetings, Finance/Loan Committee of the Board, and contribute to program effectiveness by identifying short-term and long-term issues that must be addressed, provide information and commentary pertinent to deliberations, recommend options and courses of action and implement directives.
  • As a member of the senior leadership team of the Fund, collaborate with the CEO, VP-CFO, and the Director of Marketing & Product Development on strategic and tactical decisions and overall functioning of the Fund.
  • Accept special assignments and duties as requested by the President.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform successfully in this position —

  • At least eight years’ experience in banking or lending, with a demonstrated ability to develop successful sales and marketing programs. Knowledge of Community Development Finance.
  • Significant understanding of the policies and procedures required in the banking/lending industry — particularly the principles and practices of real estate secured lending, investing and financial management. College degree with emphasis in Marketing, Business Administration or Sales; or a combination of academic study and experience
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively
  • Ability to obtain or maintain Series 7 or 63 securities licenses
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds, experience and levels of sophistication
  • Understanding of technology including spreadsheet, presentation and word processing capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially, as well as independently
  • Ability and willingness to work in a diverse and inclusive ministry environment, and willingness to learn and adapt to the UCC denominational culture.
