Description

The Supervising Attorney will oversee the coordination and administration of all aspects of the state-wide Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of the Representative Payee program. This responsibility includes direct supervision of the legal and non-legal staff and oversight of investigations of Representative Payees.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees program planning, investigations, and monitoring activities;
  • Supervises staff within the program, including recruiting, training, planning, scheduling, and evaluating staff;
  • Ensures investigations and follow-up processing are timely, accurate, and complete;
  • Maintains a professional level of knowledge of issues affecting clients;
  • Collaborates with Program Director to implement, evaluate, and report on annual goals and objectives of the program;
  • Leads and collaborates with colleagues on assigned projects;
  • Develops and manages outreach activities promoting community understanding and support of DRNY’s objectives;
  • Supports DRNY’s policies, procedures and practices;
  • Demonstrates commitment to professional and ethical standards;
  • Identifies when support from legal staff required;
  • Conducts investigations when required;
  • Significant travel including overnights across New York State;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Management experience overseeing and providing direction to professional staff;
  • Fiscal management or fraud investigation experience;
  • Licensed attorney in NY state and in good standing;
  • Excellent interviewing and investigation skills;
  • Must pass required background checks and obtain required clearances;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Excellent judgement and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, and collaboratively;
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to civil rights or public interest law;
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A passion for working with mission-driven organizations;
  • Certified Fraud Examiner certification;
  • Experience leading an investigative or monitoring team;
  • Experience managing remote staff;
  • Prior leadership experience within a public organization, nonprofit organization or law firm;
  • Litigation experience;
  • Knowledge of SSA Representative Payee Program.
  • Experience working with people with disabilities.

Working Conditions

This individual usually performs work in an office environment but the mission of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplace. This individual will be expected to travel within and outside the state as necessary. This individual's primary location will be Albany or Rochester, NY.

Schedule: 9am-5pm Reports to: Program Director Travel: Yes, 40% +
