Special Note: This manager position will focus on expanding our community engagement work more broadly throughout the union. In addition to working with AFT state federations and local unions, this position includes working with affiliates in small cities and rural areas, as well as all the divisions within the union. The ultimate purpose of this position is to help integrate community engagement into the core functions of our affiliates. By doing so, it will help the national union and local and state affiliates build meaningful relationships with social and economic justice and civil rights organizations and community partners that lead to joint action for justice and democracy and increase our collective power.

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the co-directors of the department, the individual will work to expand the number and diversity of AFT affiliates that have the skills and commitment to make community engagement an essential and integrated part of their work. The position will involve close collaboration and integration with the other departments within the national union. They will help build the national union and affiliates' breadth and depth of relationships with organizations committed to human rights and social justice. The individual in this position will help develop coordinated campaigns with AFT locals, in collaboration with community partners, at the local, state and national level. They will also help build the capacity of locals to establish and sustain effective relationships with community-based and social justice organizations around a shared vision for improving our public schools and communities.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Help locals and their community partners develop joint campaigns and projects on issues of mutual concern to improve public schools from pre-K to 12 and colleges and universities, health care, public services and communities.
  • Develop and implement training programs for local and state leadership, activists and members.
  • Coordinate planning and implementation of meetings, convenings and other events to advance the strategic goals of the department.
  • Assist AFT state federations and local unions in outreach to and building relationships with those our members serve - students, parents, families, patients, those who live in our communities.
  • Represent the AFT at meetings and in dealings with outside organizations.
  • Work with all AFT departments to integrate community engagement into their work with affiliates and members, including their training, technical assistance, publications and other support.
  • In coordination with the department co-directors, provide supervision and support to community engagement staff.
  • Develop relative components of the department budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 
Position Requirements
  • Significant experience as a community, labor or political organizer, with deep campaign experience.
  • Deep commitment to the history of organizing for economic, racial, gender, LGBTQ and social justice.
  • Ability to assess and analyze complex political situations and respond appropriately.
  • Experience in developing and executing written campaign plans is essential, including ability to determine “plan B” when necessary.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that facilitate collaboration
  • Knowledge of AFT’s structure and the issues facing affiliates and their members
  • Experience in working with coalitions and the public education system.

Work Environment This position requires travel and working nontraditional hours and weekends.
