About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.
 
Position Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Assistant

Description

Function:
Under the direction of the RHIT Specialist Supervisor, the Medical Records Clerk provides support to the Medical Records Department by scanning documents into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and routing scanned information to the appropriate provider. In addition, the Medical Records Clerk will photocopy and print records in preparation for release, observing appropriate HIPAA guidelines.

Representative Duties

  1. Prepare and/or scan documents into the electronic document imaging system.
  2. Examine pages and verifies accuracy of patient information on each page, and ensures placement into appropriate patient electronic medical record.
  3. Index scanned images in the appropriate patient electronic medical record, while analyzing the quality of scanned documents.
  4. Receive incoming requests for information and responds to requests by opening mail, assisting with telephone inquiries, and retrieving and/or sending faxes in a timely manner.
  5. Completes release of information requests by printing/scanning medical records accurately and correctly, according to requests, established procedures, and established standards of quality and productivity; and electronically transmits medical record to processing operations.
  6. Process incoming/outgoing correspondence and perform necessary follow up actions with patients and providers via telephone, fax, and email in a timely manner and with exceptional customer service.

  • Adheres to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality
  • Adheres to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and informs appropriate staff
  • Attends all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings
  • Maintains professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities; maintains and provides agency with records of continuing education activities
  • Serves on agency committees and in professional organizations when requested
  • Responsible for safeguarding patient records and ensuring compliance with HIPAA standards.
  • Responds to requests for patient records by external sources and transmitting them appropriately and in a timely fashion

Position Requirements

Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Experience with desktop computers
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a medical setting
  • Computer proficiency
  • Impeccable customer service skills
  • Experience with electronic medical records (esp. Centricity) preferred
  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately and with careful attention to detail
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to meet the following physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations:
    • May require handling boxes up to 20 pounds
    • Sit at a computer station for extended periods of time
