Purpose of Division

The National Initiatives Division of NeighborWorks America is responsible for developing, testing, and managing innovative national programs and services designed in support of the approximately 250 NeighborWorks Organizations with the overall objective of sustaining a network of excellence that creates opportunities for people to live affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities.

In addition, the division oversees grant programs beyond the NeighborWorks Network, including other non-profit and governmental agencies throughout the country. The areas of focus within National Initiatives include homeownership and lending, financial capability, green strategies, community and resident engagement, community stabilization, real estate and the national foreclosure and mitigation counseling program.

Position Summary

The SVP, National Initiatives leads a critical corporate division whose mission is to identify, evaluate, refine, transfer, and disseminate the programs strategies and innovations as well as oversee the creation of tools that will support the NeighborWorks Network. The SVP is also responsible for overseeing the strategies that lead to a Network of Excellence and generally improve the practices of affordable housing in the community development industry. Efforts undertaken by this Division transcend NeighborWorks’ geographic boundaries and are aligned with the primary business lines of NeighborWorks organizations (Homeownership Services, Homeownership Preservation & Foreclosure Prevention, Lending, Asset and Property Management, Real Estate Development, Community Stabilization and Community Building and Organizing).

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide management, leadership, strategic direction, budget formulation, and oversight for above referenced multi-faceted business functions
  • Supervise and provide strategic guidance to vice presidents within the Division to ensure strategic focus and coordination division-wide
  • Develop, monitor, and measure the Divisional Scorecard and report to the Officers and the Board on the Division’s strategic initiatives and relevant trends
  • Assume responibility for special national projects on cutting-edge issues with timely, measurable outcomes and appropriate collaboration
  • Design, facilitate, and/or support the development of pilots and innovation within the Division and across the Corporation. Within network business lines, focus on development of tools, strategies, and processes that will enhance network effectiveness and performance. Based on results, share the most broadly effective tools, strategies, and processes with the training division for inclusion in course curricula
  • Identify, design and oversee key research and analysis projects
  • Provide support and assistance for grant making across the corporation and actively provide input to and participate in the Organizational Health Tracking System Committee
  • Provide resource opportunities through the NI grants budget to network organizations and partners which lead to achievement of scorecard measures
  • Develop and/or maintain relationships with key national partners, institutions and organizations that can support or inform the work of the division
  • Manage the analysis of the performance of the NeighborWorks Network in the lines of business NI supports. Oversee the provision of analysis, information, and forecasting to the Corporation and the Network on industry trends and Network’s successes/challenges on the programmatic initiatives and business lines that NI supports.
  • Provide support for staff in other parts of the corporation in program-related specialties. Support and oversee divisional staff efforts on coordinating committees. Oversee support of advisory and steering committees assigned to NI ensuring that Network representation is broad and diverse, and that meetings are well prepared, managed, and have timely follow up
  • Participate in the Senior Leadership Team of the Corporation, including participation in the development and implementation of the corporate strategic plan, ensuring the alignment of the divisional activities with the corporate strategic goals
  • Collaborate closely with NeighborWorks Services Division, Field Operations and Organizational Assessment to ensure that strategic direction, appropriate analysis and information on line of business challenges and opportunities is shared and service to the Network is efficient, non-duplicative and strategic
  • Work collaboratively with Organizational Assessment regarding performance of network organizations within the established lines of business within NI
  • Represent NeighborWorks America at Conferences, Congressional Meetings, Press and Public Events
  • Respond to media inquiries and interview as requested by the NeighborWorks communications staff and represent NeighborWorks with congressional staff or other government entities, as needed
  • Develop and manage, in collaboration with the NeighborWorks Services Division and other divisions as appropriate, several symposia each year on topical, cutting edge issues, strategies and policies affecting the affordable housing and community development field
  • Other job related duties as assigned

Nature of Work Contacts:
The SVP works closely with the CEO, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Counsel, and other senior management.

 
Position Requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications:
(a) Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Will consider relevant professional experience in lieu of a degree.
(b) Experience: Fifteen-plus (15+) years of demonstrated experience in management and leadership of highly professional and technically trained staff. Demonstrated ability to achieve the highest levels of staff motivation, dedication and performance. Prior experience supervising, advising, and coaching managers. Direct experience in some facet of low-income community development, community building, housing or management and leadership for work in low-income communities and community organizations.

  • Excellent strategic leadership and analytical skills.
  • Strong planning, and decision-making skills are essential as well as strong interpretative and public presentation skills.
  • Ability to facilitate diverse groups around shared action and/or learning agendas.
  • Demontrated experience managing a large diverse set of initiatives, employees and budgets.
  • Experience in budget development, management and oversight.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree preferred.
