JOB DESCRIPTION

POLICE OFFICER(S)

OVERVIEW: Employees in this classification are charged with law enforcement responsibilities, and provide law enforcement services to the citizens and visitors to the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribal Community. This may include either uniformed, plainclothes, or special detail assignments. Area of responsibilities may include the standard boundaries of the Tribal Community and additional areas as dictated by need, and assignment. Work under the direction of the Patrol Sergeant, who reviews work on an occasional basis for the overall effectiveness of compliance with policies, tribal, state and federal laws.

SUPERVISED BY: Patrol Sergeant/Patrol Lieutenant

POSITION STATUS: Permanent - Full-Time / Full Benefits

SALARY LEVEL: Entry Level/Academy Cadet - Grade 11 - $25.83 (per hour)

Completion of Academy/Probation - Grade 11 - $25.83 (per hour)

Lateral/Certified/Experienced - Grade 11- $27.12 (per hour)

WORK SCHEDULE: Varies - working hours/shifts - must have flexibility

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

  • Enforce tribal laws and ordinances
  • Respond to citizen requests for assistance
  • Arrest criminal code violators
  • Guard, transport and care for inmates
  • Monitor vehicle traffic on highways and roads within the tribal jurisdiction
  • Investigate vehicle crashes
  • Operate Doppler radar unit in vehicle speed enforcement
  • Write reports, citations, document and maintain files, including using computers for reporting and retrieval
  • Execute evictions and repossessions
  • Transport inmates and juveniles to and from correctional facilities and court
  • Search prisoners and for weapons and contraband
  • Acquire, execute and return warrants and search warrants
  • Collect and process evidence
  • Participation on special teams
  • Answer telephone and letter requests from attorneys, plaintiffs and tribal court officer
  • Testify in court
  • Operate vehicles and other equipment, including firearms, during hours of work
  • Intervene in domestic and mental health disturbances
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance
  • Perform other work relevant to job duties as required
  • Service of housing and court documents to tribal members

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of modern police practices and methods
  • Knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest and evidence
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Police Department
  • Knowledge of first aid principles
  • Ability to deal firmly and courteously with those under custody and the public
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper courses of action to be taken
  • Ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation
  • Ability to meet specific physical requirements that may be established by competent authority
  • Ability to develop a working relationship with other allied departments
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including using computer to generate reports
  • Ability to remain calm in tense or hostile situations
  • Ability to pass certification in the use of self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Ability to work with tribal community and diverse population
  • Ability to restrain an individual and employ all use of force options
  • Skills in the use of care of firearms, taser and baton

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess valid Washington State driver license
  • High school diploma
  • Pass background investigation, psychological exam, medical exam, polygraph
  • No Misdemeanor Convictions within 1 year of hire date, with the exception of minor traffic offenses
  • No Domestic Violence Convictions that would prevent the applicant from carrying a Firearm under Federal or Washington State Law
  • Must not have been convicted of any federal felony or offense punishable in Washington as a felony

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Hazard of physical attack or injury
  • Inside and outside work with exposure to weather conditions
  • Exposure to fire, chemical, electrical, mechanical and firearm hazards
  • Exposure to fast moving vehicles and motor vehicle accidents
  • Ability to lift, push/pull objects weighing up to 165 pounds infrequently
  • Ability to frequently sit or stand for long periods of time

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants will be required to successfully complete a fitness test immediately as the first stage of qualification testing. All applicants must be able to meet the Fitness Standards for entry to the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission at the time of application.
  • The officer(s) will be required to attend a Police Academy in the Seattle area for the first 4 months of their employment OR attend BIA Police Academy in New Mexico for 4 ˝ to 5 months.
  • New officers will be required to enter into a contract with the Tribe
  • Required to obtain certification from Washington State Law Enforcement Standards Board Training and legally be able to carry a firearm
  • Must be able to comply with the LOWER ELWHA KLALLAM TRIBE Drug free Workplace policies.

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe this position is Indian Preference in hiring in accordance with P.L. 93-638.
