Information Technology Student Assistant

Definition and Purpose

Under the supervision of the Assistant Coordinator - Information Technology (User Support), the Information Technology Student Assistant will be responsible for providing end-user support and hardware maintenance. Information technology provides services to ASI programs located in the University Union, Recreation Center, Children's Center, Sports Complex, and Doerr Family Field. The Information Technology Department supports a mix of Windows and Linux servers and Windows and Apple workstations.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 GPA.
  • Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and those with special limitations or needs.
  • Experience working in a high volume fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to change.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others or independently, as the situation requires.
  • Must have an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office products.
  • Additional experience with SQL, Oracle, IIS, Visual Basic, and the MAC OS preferred.
  • Ability to provide positive customer service.
  • Strong problem solving skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answer customer support phone calls and emails.
  • Monitor work order tracking system, escalate priorities, and document progress.
  • Perform daily technology checks of kiosk and conference room technology.
  • Install and configure software including Office365.
  • Repair hardware including replacement of computer and printer components.
  • Image and deploy user workstations.
  • Develop and maintain systems/policy documentation.
  • Research and learn new technology solutions.
  • Provide quality customer service for all staff and other customers.
  • Maintain prompt hours and follow absence procedures.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with staff and co-workers.
  • Adhere to and enforce all ASI policies and procedures.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops, and retreats.
  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
  • Participate in ASI assessment planning and goal setting process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Period of Employment

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Compensation and Hours

Pay Rate: $13.00 per hour; maximum 20 hours per week.
