Shift Supervisor 

Description

MP&W is seeking a SHIFT SUPERVISOR will be responsible for plant operation within established guidelines during their shift. Administer Hold Tag, Confined Space, Hot Work, Fire Protection, and Emergency Response programs at the Generation site. Assist with Material Handling issues in the absence of the Material Handling Supervisor. Coordinate with System Control and Grain Processing Corporation as needed.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Implement Hold Tag/Lockout Tagout procedures and ensure safe working conditions.

  • Work with System Operators, Generation Engineering, Generation Maintenance, Generation Technical, Material Handling, crafts, outside contractors, and GPC powerhouse personnel to:

    • Direct boiler turbine operation during normal and emergency situations, instructing Operators to make changes as appropriate while always taking in account personnel safety and equipment reliability.

    • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local emission regulations.

    • Notify proper personnel to make emergency repairs of equipment.

    • Minimize impact of craft activities on plant operation.

  • Supervise the activities of Generation Operations personnel, including the following:

    • Make recommendations for hiring, promotion, evaluation, discharge, or other disciplinary action.

    • Review and approve time tickets for Generation Operations.

    • Prepare and conduct employee performance appraisals.

    • Train employees on MP&W policies and procedures and ensure employees understand thoroughly.

    • Ensure apprenticeship program training is being completed.

    • Provide guidance to staff regarding work procedures, technical issues, work priorities, and special requests.

    • Assess, actively develop, and set goals with employees to assist in their preparation for future growth within the Utility.

    • Develop/maintain a culture of safety within the department.Support the Utility’s safety programs, ensure adequate training, and provide safe working conditions and practices.

    • Develop/maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department.Utilize lean principles and other continuous improvement tools in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the department.

    • Ensure work is completed accurately, thoroughly, safely, timely, and that employees are as productive as possible.

  • Prepare shift logs, reports, and maintenance requests as needed.

Other Responsibilities

  • Conduct safety meetings for Generation Operations personnel.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications

Knowledge

  • High school graduate.Associate’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a coal-fired power plant.

  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Strong working knowledge of all plant equipment and its operation, including a DCS system.

  • Knowledge of basic chemistry, electricity, and electronics.

  • Complete understanding of the LOTO Generation Hold Tag Program as well as a strong understanding of all plant policies and procedures.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.

  • Proficiency with use of Microsoft Office Word and Excel at an intermediate level as well as other systems such as computerized maintenance management system.

  • Good judgment and reasoning skills.

  • Problem identification, analysis, and solving.

Abilities

  • Ability to work as part of a team, either as team leader or a member of a team.

  • Ability to drive results and ensure work is accomplished properly, safely, and in a timely manner.

  • High mechanical aptitude.

  • Ability to work independently, effectively prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adjust work priorities as needed to meet department/organizational objectives.

  • Must be able to read schematics, blueprints, and working drawings.

  • Must be able to distinguish colors.

Other Position Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be able to attend work on a regular basis and work overtime as needed.

  • Must maintain a method of communication in order to be contacted by MP&W outside normal work hours.

  • Must be able to work 12-hour swing shifts in potentially stressful situations.

Work Environment

  • Work environment is primarily in an industrial coal-fired power plant.Time is spent in an office and in the plant.

  • Must comply with all safety and site rules at all locations.

  • Must comply with the Respiratory Protection Program.

  • Must comply with the Hearing Protection Program.
