Purpose of Division

Human Resources develops and implements innovative human resources programs that enable NeighborWorks America to attract, develop, and retain the best and brightest diverse talent to achieve NeighborWorks America's mission. As a strategic partner with management, Human Resources develops creative recruitment plans; develops and implements competitive comprehensive total compensation including benefits, incentives, awards and salaries; provides employee development, leadership, and programs to help employees retain technical skills; and, implements quality of life initiatives that provide increased flexibility for managers and employees and allow the NeighborWorks America to compete for and retain highly-skilled employees. The HR Division works in partnership with the Chief Diversity Officer to advance the work our of Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative (REDI).

Position Summary

As a key member of HR, the Senior Director, Human Resources is responsible for a broad range of functional human resources activities and will ensure effective and efficient management of HR initiatives. The successful candidate will possess outstanding thought leadership, communication and strategic thinking, with a proven record of excellence. The senior director will serve as the escalation point for complex employee relations issues and investigations by utilizing strong negotiation, conflict resolution and mediation experience. This individual promotes positive employee relations throughout the organization by ensuring development and implementation of consistent and equitable processes, providing guidance on best practices, identifying solutions and diffusing issues to mitigate risk while maintaining legal compliance.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides direction to proactively identify risks, diffuse issues, provide employee and management consultation, conduct investigations, and resolve issues as they arise.
  • Leads and manages strategic initiatives in various functional areas of Human Resources, i.e. benefits administration, workforce planning, talent acquisition, compensation management, performance management, talent acquisition, employee development and leadership development.
  • Develops positive business relationships with employees and key stakeholders through ensuring that employee relations issues are addressed in a comprehensive and collaborative manner.
  • Works closely with the Senior Vice President, Human Resources with the long-term and short-term strategic initiatives that impact organizational culture, elevate the employee experience and support the organization's strategic plan.
  • Explores the market's best practices, workplace diversity and inclusion trends, and metrics, and implements appropriate best practices in the organization.
  • Assists in the development and evaluation of reports, decisions, and operational metrics with regard to workforce planning, career pathing and skill gap analysis.
  • Leads and manages activities to support employee engagement, employee relations, management coaching and staff development with a keen eye on diversity and inclusion, including recommending process/customer service improvements, innovative solutions, and/or policy changes.
  • Works in collaboration with Director of REDI (race, equity, diversity and inclusion), employee resource groups, cross-functional and cross-divisional teams to develop, implement and monitor programs that promote DEI in the organization.
  • Responsible for ensuring that staff development and leadership development initiatives advance culture and promote an inclusive environment throughout the organization.
  • Provides advice, counsel and consultation to staff at levels to guide them in understanding and/or carrying out their responsibilities on personnel matters in an equitable and inclusive manner.
  • Managing all aspects of personnel management for direct reports, including but not limited to: work plan development, performance evaluations, and time and attendance. Supervising assigned staff according to overall company policy, including: developing staff to maximize potential, monitoring and assisting staff with work progress, and monitoring performance to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Act as a senior HR advisor for policy and procedure interpretation, in partnership with SVP of HR. Listen to and address conflicts, complaints and concerns; and strive to resolve them in a positive manner that benefits all parties and facilitates healthy work relationships and an inclusive atmosphere.
  • Engages in proactive outreach and engagement to mitigate the escalation of employee relations and employee engagement matters.

Nature of Work Contacts: NeighborWorks America Officers, senior management and divisional staff, contractors, vendors and other company representatives. Outside vendors and consultants.

Fiscal Responsibilities: Budgetary oversight

 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
(a) Education:
A Bachelor’s degree in human resources management, business management or a related discipline. Will consider relevant professional experience in lieu of a degree.

(b) Experience: A minimum of 12 years relevant professional human resources experience, inclusive of a minimum of five years management and leadership experience leading Employee Relations and 3 or more of the following HR functions (benefits administration, workforce planning, talent acquisition, compensation management, performance management, employee development, leadership development). At least 2 years of demonstrated, practical understanding and application of race, equity, diversity and inclusion principles in an organizational setting.

(c) Licenses, Certifications: SPHR or SHRM-SCP certification required

(d) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Superior working knowledge of Human Resources principles, practices, federal and state regulations, with experience in non-profit human resources environments, utilizing current industry best practices.
  • Provides vision and critical leadership to manage the Employee Relations function in support of the values, mission and culture of NeighborWorks America. Experience advising and coaching managers and staff at all levels within the organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current best practices and trends in diversity and inclusion, including familiarity with key concepts (e.g. cultural competence, unconscious bias, etc.)
  • Experience and participation in activities that demonstrate skills, knowledge, ability and/or commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Understanding of the theories and frameworks that inform effective DEI and social impact initiatives (e.g. social action, multicultural competency, intersectionality)
  • Demonstrated track record of taking initiative, leading large complex projects, working in a fast-paced environment and handling multiple and changing priorities simultaneously.
  • Solid organization skills and detail oriented, with ability to translate strategies into tactical plans with clear actions, accountability, and goals in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Superior relationship management skills with the ability to collaborate effectively and partner well others in order to build strong and trusting relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal, auditory, oral and written communication skills; ability to articulate complex concepts clearly, concisely, and compellingly with all levels of the organization to achieve results (including C-suite and senior leadership).
  • Exceptional research and analytical skills, with an emphasis on the ability to synthesize large amounts of information into key findings.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.


(e) Technology: Proficient in MS Office Suite, with strong Microsoft Excel analysis skills and HRMS skills. Proficiency in UltiPro and Saba are preferred. Experience and/or familiarity with cloud-based applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in human resources management, business management or a related discipline.
