Operating Engineer, Academy Museum

Summary:

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world's premier institution dedicated to the art and science of movies. Located on Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles, the Museum will be simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational, and entertaining. More than a museum, this dynamic film center will offer unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and moviemaking.

Working with a prestigious onsite team and service vendors, the Operating Engineer is responsible for a range of mission-critical functions include the maintenance and operation of the mechanical, electrical, and life-safety. You will be responsible for the process that ensures the museum mechanical problems are identified and repaired quickly and the engineering team or contractors deliver quality service and internal customers' requirements are met. You will be integral in starting up equipment and helping to open the museum to the public. You will help to develop the department in the development of processes and procedures.

We are currently hiring for the day and swing shift. Precise work times are TBD.

Responsibilities:

MEPF Maintenance

  • Under the guidance of the Chief Engineer, maintain the mechanical, electrical, and life-safety systems within the museum facility.
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in mechanical, electrical, and life-safety systems.
  • Operate the BMS system, troubleshoot issues, and perform controls maintenance.
  • Track and complete preventive and predicative maintenance schedules on schedule and as required in coordination with the facilities team and vendors.
  • Ensure museum equipment is operating efficiently, including analyzing existing operating conditions to improve overall efficiency and cost reduction.
  • Undertake plumbing and minor building repairs and assist other departments within the museum.

Administration

  • Assist the Director and Chief in technical writing of MOPs and SOPs for preventive and corrective maintenance actives.
  • Work with the Director and Chief on workorder database maintenance to resolve issues based on agreed upon priorities.
  • Manage incidents, including writing up reports.
 
Position Requirements
  • Associates degree in Mechanical and/or Electrical maintenance and mechanics or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience maintaining and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems including but not limited to: chilled water and hot water loop systems, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water treatment systems, VFDs, circulating pumps, heat exchangers, fan coil units, humidification systems, gas fired boilers and water heaters, related HVAC equipment, BMS/EMS, Fire Life Safety equipment and systems, emergency standby diesel generator system, fuel/oil system, 480/277 and 208/120 electrical generation and distribution systems.
  • Preference given to candidates with experience in museum, large hotel, data center, hospital, or similar work environments.
  • Journeyman-level expertise in a mission critical environment, strong technical ability, and innovative thinking across building functions with particular emphasis on mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems. Similar experience with plumbing is a big plus.
  • Expert knowledge in industrial safety regulations and best practices (lockout/tagout, PPE, arc flash protection, Cal-OSHA, EPA, etc).
  • Experience with CMMS systems (trouble ticket management, maintenance activities and infrastructure projects for work order completion processes).
  • Experience with BMS control logic (Alerton) strongly preferred.
  • Experience writing MOPs, SOPs and reports.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Expertise with safe operation and maintenance with a wide variety of hand, power, and machine tools (drills, saws, presses, meters, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal staff, contractors, etc.
  • Ability to logically analyze and solve problems in a timely matter and reduce any critical impact to the facility.
  • Ability to learn and address issues as they arise during normal and after hours in a timely matter.
  • Comfortable working in a fast pace, high stress environment with shifting priorities.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods, climb on a variety of ladder types, stoop/ kneel/ crouch/ crawl in confined spaces, reach with hands and arms, and lift/ carry up to 50 pounds for brief periods.
  • Availability to work outside of normal business hours including weekends, late nights, and holidays.
