Caseworker A or B /Child and Adult Protective Services - Rifle

General Purpose:

Provide a variety of routine and complex professional social work duties, including areas such as child abuse and neglect; youth in conflict; adults unable to protect their own interests; family resources; and adoption.

Essential Functions:

(These duties are a representative sample; position assignments and detailed work instructions may vary.)

Caseworker A (non-exempt)

Under close supervision and within established guidelines:

  1. Develops the skills necessary to provide services to client population.
  2. For routine cases, investigates and performs needs assessment: gathers information, identifies problems and determines level of risk.
  3. Establishes goals; develops and implements a written plan for services with objectives, action steps to achieve the objectives, and measurable outcomes.
  4. Determines appropriate collateral contacts and conducts interviews.
  5. Monitors progress according to plan objectives.
  6. Coordinates with law enforcement when necessary according to county guidelines.
  7. Sets up medical or psychological/psychiatric assessments as needed.
  8. Attends and participates in court hearings as needed.
  9. Facilitates treatment team meetings to monitor case progress and modify plans as needed.
  10. Transports clients as necessary or required.
  11. Records findings in appropriate database.
  12. Responds to after-hours crisis calls as required, including the on-call scheduling rotation.
  13. Determines the level of risk to the individual.
  14. Determines what services and interventions will assure the individual’s safety in the home.
  15. Coordinates with supervisors on critical decisions.
  16. Drives vehicle to perform one or more essential functions.
  17. Reviews all work products to ensure highest level of quality.
  18. Performs other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.

Caseworker B (Exempt)

  1. Under minimal supervision, performs all essential functions of Caseworker A.
  2. Assumes responsibility for more complex cases.
  3. Facilitates treatment team meetings.
  4. May assist in training Caseworker A.
  5. Performs other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.

Job Qualifications:

Caseworker A:

Knowledge of:

  1. Judicial proceedings.
  2. Modern office processes and procedures.
  3. Keyboarding, data entry and word processing.
  4. Relevant computer hardware and software applications.
  5. Basic math skills.

Ability to:

  1. Speak, read and write the English language.
  2. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  3. Effectively and efficiently provide customer service to the public.
  4. Be sensitive to individual values and needs.
  5. Work with the public including disabled, hostile and mentally unstable individuals.
  6. Handle stressful situations in a professional manner, including angry or difficult individuals; accurately assess situations and people.
  7. Interpret a variety of instructions with abstract and/or concrete variables.
  8. Make decisions incorporating information and input from various arenas.
  9. Use resources to solve problems.
  10. Transport clients.
  11. Establish effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors, other Departments/Offices, and other agencies.
  12. Understand and practice safety procedures and precautions.
  13. Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.

Caseworker B:

In addition to the abilities required for Caseworker A, ability to:

  1. Apply relevant Federal, state and local laws, rules, regulations, codes and/or statutes.
  2. Successfully manage more complex cases to completion under minimal supervision.
  3. Prioritize work and give adequate attention to all cases.
  4. Self-motivate and demonstrate initiative.
  5. Use independent judgment as to proper course of action and think and act quickly in emergencies.

Internal Contacts:

Frequently interacts with other Department employees and the County Attorney’s Office.

External Contacts:

Frequently interacts with parents, children, relatives, community organizations and resources, treatment professionals and the Courts.

Required Physical Activities:

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to reach, grasp, finger, stand and/or sit for long periods of time, walk, talk and hear; occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

The employee occasionally may be exposed to hazardous situations, which may involve physically violent persons, interviewing mentally or emotionally disturbed persons or bodily injury from biohazards, infections or blood-borne pathogens.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud, with frequent interruptions and multiple demands.

Required Travel:

The employee is frequently required to travel within the County.

Computers and Office Equipment:

Computer and relevant software applications; telephone system; facsimile; scanner; shredder; and copier.

Position Requirements

Minimum Education Requirements:

Caseworker A & B: Bachelor's degree in human services or related field.

Minimum Experience Required:

Caseworker A (Non-exempt): 1 year of experience working in an environment with children and/or adults; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Caseworker B (Exempt): 4 years’ experience working in a human service related field; or 3 years of experience working in a human service related field and a Master’s degree in a human services related field; or has the Colorado Child Welfare Case Worker Certification in addition to the education and experience stated above.
