DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a temporary full-time Research / Lab Manager to work within the TRAIL lab, a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team investigating ways to enhance the inclusion and participation of children and youth with disabilities. The Research Manager, reporting to the Senior Scientist, will plan, co-ordinate and execute research within the TRAIL lab with a primary focus on our project: 'Enhancing healthy and productive work for youth and young adults with disabilities' funded through a CIHR-SSHRC partnership grant. Potential for renewal depending on performance and funding.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative research-related responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI) regarding new research proposals, grant applications; preparation of reports, presentations, publications, other knowledge translation materials, and development and review of study protocols.
  • Ensure quality, integrity and security on all study related information and data
  • Prepare protocols for use
  • Design and develop data collection forms and/or questionnaires, interview guides etc.
  • Keep up-to-date with regulations and policies governing clinical research (e.g., TCPS2, ICH GCP, etc.)
  • Develop policies and procedures related to the research program, ensuring that external regulations and guidelines are followed
  • Oversee all submissions to Research Ethics Board (REB) and co-ordinate revisions and amendments
  • Oversee annual approval process and amend protocols and consents as required
  • Develop informed consent documents based on regulations, REB consent templates and institutional requirements
  • Manage research components on TRAIL lab webpages
  • Participate in audits, site visits and monitoring by regulatory bodies or industry sponsors
  • Supervise literature reviews and keep current with study literature
    • Develop study binders / research files (e.g., shared folders, relevant resources and literature) for TRAIL lab staff and research team to use and ensure they are up-to-date
  • Supervise database development and entry and/or transcribing of interviews
  • Ensure the quality of databases/transcriptions and supervise database cleaning, anonymization and data analysis
  • Develop and monitor timelines for existing studies, balancing the demands of multiple projects within the lab
  • For multi-center projects, management of the overall study, including selection, training and ongoing communications with all staff/trainees, other study sites / partners / collaborators and organizing team and working group meetings
    • Provide regular updates to larger team / partners
    • Co-ordinate communication within and between staff/partners/collaborators to ensure targets are achieved
  • Develop training programs as needed
  • Attend relevant departmental meetings or rounds to increase knowledge and understanding
  • Develop quality control guidelines for studies
  • Oversee purchases and maintenance of all research equipment, supplies, invoices etc.
  • Assist with overall TRAIL lab strategic planning, dissemination and community outreach
    • Assist with knowledge translation activities including design/development of promotional materials, reports, manuscripts, posters, presentations, lay summaries, infographics, and organizing stakeholder events (e.g., workshops, webinars, including ordering catering, organizing travel) etc.

Research participant related responsibilities

  • Oversee recruitment and participant contact
  • Oversee participant data collection / interviews and assessments as required by study protocols
  • Monitor serious adverse events or reactions, reporting to PI

Human resources and financial responsibilities

  • Recruit, train and supervise TRAIL lab staff, students / trainees, and volunteers
  • Encourage and foster collaborative, inclusive, and productive relationships within TRAIL lab teams, staff and trainees, other participating partners and investigators.
  • Assist PI/Senior Scientist in regularly monitoring staff performance and annual performance assessments
  • Develop, manage and forecast study budgets and contracts
  • Develop in-services on study requirements

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Master's degree in Health or Social Science (thesis-based degree) or a related field with a minimum of 4 years of research experience (i.e., relevant paid employment).
  • Strong background in disability studies, psycho-social aspects of rehabilitation and/or sociology of work/disability
  • Function independently, yet collaboratively within a team
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, facilitation, organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong leadership, management and mentoring skills (project management certification considered an asset)
  • Experience managing large-scale, multi-site projects with multiple, inter-disciplinary partners
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access) and willingness to learn other software as needed
  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative research methods and statistical database platforms (e.g. REDCAP, SPSS, R etc.) and analysis
  • Excellent knowledge qualitative research methods and analysis (e.g., NVIVO)
  • Commitment to and support of the organizational mission and vision of Bloorview and TRAIL lab

Occasional limited travel within Ontario may be required. Occasionally may require a flexible working schedule
