Position 30 - Fire Chief  
Description

The Fire Chief is resonsible to lead a team of professionals while delivering quality professional services including protecting lives and property from fire and harm through emergency and non-emergency services, education, code enforcement and overall direction of the operations of a paramedic level ambulance service.

1. Manage the administrative and operative functions of the department and perform administrative duties. This includes payroll, overtime, Fair Labor Standards Act, processing all bills and receipts.

2. Prepare, review, submit monthly fire report, fire inspection, and ambulance reports, including annual reports of such activities. Prepare budgets and other documents pertaining to the function of department.

3. Determine and review goals, objectives, policies, procedures and overall resource needs. This includes developing capital outlay for five-year plan. Planning for future expansion to provide adequate fire and EMS responses and protection as well as plan on equipment purchase and maintenance and utilization.

4. Oversee daily operations of the department.

5. Perform personnel administration for staff and administer the collective bargaining agreement.

6. Supervise and develop staff, establish minimum standards of training and technical competence.

7. Perform public relations activities to promote a positive department image of fire and emergency services, respond to public inquiries related to public protection and safety of residents and businesses located in our community.

8. Respond to fire and emergency calls, and fulfill the command position of such incidents which occur at any given time.

9. Collaborate with other City departments and officials and other fire agencies and regulatory agencies to provide fire, emergency related services and associated emergency management services. Meetings include various committee and council meetings, Fire Chief's organizations, communication, inspection, and investigative measures as well as mutual aid responses within the Fox Cities and surrounding areas.

10. Serve as the City's Safety Director.

11. Serve as the City's Emergency Management Coordinator.

12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of developing collaborative relationships internally and externally.

A strong core value system and an emphasis on teamwork, respect, and innovation are essential characteristics sought for this position.

It is also responsible for fostering internal and external relationships and for the mentoring/coaching of command staff.

This position requires ten years of full-time experience in firefighting, fire prevention and emergency/rescue operations and five years of full-time experience in a supervisory capacity.

An associate degree in fire science is required with a Bachelor’s Degree in fire administration, public administration or related field or Master’s Degree preferred.
