Share Email Opening Title Framer/Preparator, Academy Museum  Description Job Summary: This position will work as a shared member of the Exhibitions and Collections departments as a Framer/Art Handler/Installer. Primary focus will be on framing, artworks installation in exhibition galleries, preparing and packing art loans and assisting with collections handling. Work will include moving/packing/unpacking and installing works of art for display or storage. This position has dual reporting - reports to the Exhibitions Installation Manager and Chief Preparator. This is a temporary, full-time position through March 2020. Duties and Responsibilities: Framing of artwork, including, but not limited to, cutting mattes, backing board, and plexi as needed and as directed by supervisors, curators, or exhibit designers. Move artworks between storage, exhibition, photography, shipping, and other departments employing methods from hand-carry to specialized mechanical means, depending on size, weight and condition. Hang, level, and secure paintings, prints, drawings and photographs. Position, mount and secure large and small sculptures. Assists with onsite mock-ups prior to exhibition opening. Assist with packing and unpacking of works of art for transport using established methods and materials. Work with both temporary and special exhibitions to install and secure wall panels, platforms, display cases, pedestals, labels and signs. Assist with the maintenance of art storage spaces; vacuum and dust art storage room and furniture; add or replace materials, as needed, to protect or support works while in storage. Assemble prefabricated cardboard trays and other module packing systems for warehousing artwork.   Position Requirements Bachelor of Fine Arts, Arts, or related degree. 3-5 yrs of related work experience in the art field. Experience with framing, working with object and/or painting conservators, and utilizing workflow ergonomics and safety practices. Knowledge of museum-level art handling practices and experience moving and handling fragile, heavy works of art with great care and delicacy. Knowledge of archival materials and museum/gallery warehousing best practices. Working knowledge of museum quality art installation hardware (object mounts, hooks, cleats, cable rigging, and security hardware) and exhibition lighting (light meters, gels, and filters). Gantry rigging experience and forklift certification is a plus. Working knowledge of hand power tools (hammer drill and impact driver, circular saw, reciprocating saw, oscillating saw, router, grinder, and sander) and standard industrial woodworking equipment (table saw, band saw, belt/disc sander, planer, jointer, miter saw, and drill press). Demonstrated painting skills (roller and brush finishes, and knowledge of wood staining and finishing techniques). Experience working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of attention to accuracy and detail; demonstrated ability to work without close supervision and to communicate problems clearly to supervisor. Demonstrated experience working successfully in an active team environment, performing rotating tasks while exercising discretion and sound independent judgment. Prior experience or willingness to be trained on and utilize OSHA approved safety equipment such as respirators and protective clothing. Some experience with A/V equipment, interactive displays, and digital technology preferred. Ability to climb and work on ladders, perform intermittent physical activity (walking, standing, twisting, sitting, bending, stooping), and lift/move up to 50 lbs. Ability to work in an active construction site and in a gallery environment with paints, cleansers and other similar products as well as in spaces that collect dust.
