Description

CLASS SUMMARY:

Serves as the Physician of the methadone program providing intake medical evaluations, dosage determination, chemotherapy management including the supervision of detoxification and withdrawal. Serves as the Primary Care Physician for the Residential Crisis Stabilization Unit, providing intake medical evaluations within 24 hours of admission, responding by phone 24/7 to urgent medical issues, and maintaining and managing a pool of part-time physicians necessary to insure coverage.

DISTINGUISHING ELEMENTS OF THE CLASS:

I. IMPACT: Work of this class has immediate effect on admissions to the methadone and residential crisis stabilization program. The incumbent has the responsibility for assuring that clients are appropriately screened for methadone maintenance according to federal guidelines and are medically cleared for residential treatment. The Physician has direct responsibility for the medical care and well-being of assigned patients.

II. LATITUDE: Medical screenings are generally performed with a nursing assistant. Other duties are performed independently. The Senior Medical Director, the Medical Director of Crisis Stabilization Services and the Methadone Program Manager provide consultation and supervision on an ongoing basis.

III. INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: Work involves regular contact with substance abusing clients and their families. Incumbent will also participate in regular case staffings with a variety of staff members.

IV. DIFFICULTY: Work involves the frequent provision of general medical assessment and treatment, excellent knowledge of withdrawal and overdose symptoms, and use of methadone as chemotherapy.

V. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment. Incumbent is frequently exposed to substance abusing individuals who may be physically unhealthy and emotionally unstable.

VI. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

Thorough knowledge of the assessment of addiction in opiate addicts, including symptoms and signs of withdrawal and overdose.

Thorough knowledge of the application of methadone chemotherapy to opiate addicts.

Ability to provide comprehensive medical examinations.

Ability to establish and maintain rapport patients with Mental Health and Substance Abuse disorders.

Thorough knowledge of primary medical care.

Ability to establish effective working relationships with a variety of professionals.

VII. LICENSURE: Unrestricted license as a physician by the Virginia State Board of Medicine and a current DEA license. ABMS certified or certified eligible in a primary care specialty

VIII. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide physical examinations as required by federal and state standards and program guidelines.

Maintains up-to-date well documented medical records which comply with federal and state standards.

Prescribes methadone and manages chemotherapy including supervision of detoxification and withdrawal.

Reviews all laboratory results and makes appropriate recommendations.

Assumes on call responsibilities for admission dosages or other program concerns of a medical nature.

Participates in case staffings as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Counsels clients on medical issues.

Other duties as necessary.

IX. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant walking, moving, carrying, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling.
