Youth and Adult Engagement Supervisor 

Description

Woodland Park Zoo is currently seeking a Supervisor to lead customized and deep learning engagements which provide opportunities for children, youth and adults to connect with and support the zoo and its mission in meaningful ways. These fun and mission-relevant learning opportunities will foster empathy, develop ecological literacy and efficacy, and empower communities to live sustainably with wildlife and their habitats. The supervisor will oversee the development and implementation of revenue generating engagements, as well as strategies to provide access to mission-based programs through partnerships, underwriting, or innovative fee structures for broad audiences.

SUMMARY

The supervisor will mentor, develop and motivate staff across multiple audience or program areas (including early childhood, youth and adult programs) while overseeing daily program/project operations. The successful candidate will be a proactive, collaborative and adaptive leader who can drive development and implementation of innovative, inclusive and responsive learning engagements to meet strategic plan goals. The supervisor will plan ahead in order to establish staff schedules and resources, while responding quickly and easily to new information or conditions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all phases of the development and implementation of assigned content and programs areas at the zoo and in the community.
  • Oversee initiative and concept development and implementation processes and teams.
  • Supervise a team of Instructors, Learning Facilitators, Lead Learning Facilitators and other staff and volunteers. Oversee the daily operations and implementation of programming. Develop staff work plans and schedules; assign and direct work.
  • Oversee the development, facilitation and evaluation of training programs and activities. Facilitate trainings or training elements as appropriate
  • Under direction of Manager(s), Director and/or Vice President and with the assistance of the Development Department, write grants and grant reports, participate in donor cultivation tours, events and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Research content and write articles, blog posts, fliers, publications, grant narrative information, communications/interpretive materials and other promotional and support materials and oversee similar staff efforts.
  • Provide customer service information and assistance to the public, staff and volunteers. Respond to inquiries, concerns or problem incidents made by the public or staff regarding programming, site policies or site safety hazards. Address and rectify customer issues, complaints and disputes and resolve problems.
  • Interview, hire, and train employees; conduct annual staff evaluations; effectively coach, mentor and discipline employees; and maintain personnel records. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws
  • Collaborate with Education Research staff to develop and implement comprehensive evaluation plans for assigned program and content area(s). Apply evaluation findings to achieve program improvements
  • Leverage existing partnerships and identify and develop new strategic partnerships.
  • Work with other zoo supervisors and managers to help ensure smooth, effective department operations and programs to meet strategic plan goals.
  • Manage program budgets, oversee purchases and financial records. Identify and analyze staffing and equipment needs.
  • Facilitate meetings, including developing agendas, facilitating inclusive participation, building consensus, resolving conflicts, capturing notes and assigning follow-up tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise a team of Lead Learning Facilitators, Learning Facilitators and other front-line staff and volunteers. This position requires the ability to interact effectively with employees in order to direct workflow, assess performance, and assign duties.

  • Ability to anticipate needs and challenges, take initiative, ask questions, and provide solutions to achieve department and organization objectives

  • Ability to work a non-standard/flexible schedule, which may include weekends, some evenings and holidays

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 6 years combined education and experience in youth, family and adult programming or informal, environmental and/or sustainability education.
  • Experience with curriculum and program development and delivery.
  • Minimum of two years leading and coordinating teams and projects.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid US State Driver's License required.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient and experienced with Microsoft Office applications; particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Must be able to work with customized databases and technology, and conduct Internet research.

CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS

Must be enthusiastic and customer service oriented and deal with clients in a courteous and professional manner. Enjoy working with the public including diverse populations and people of all ages and abilities.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write grants, reports, speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position requires an ability to walk or transit across the 92-acre facility in variable weather conditions and enter non-public behind the scenes staff areas. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
