Position Refractive Technician  

Associated Eye Care is a multi-specialty group practice providing surgical services and vision care for all ages. We have five locations spanning the eastern Twin Cities of Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Position Summary

Associated Eye Care is currently seeking a Refractive Technician. This individual is responsible for gathering essential medical information from the patient, performing a variety of diagnostic tests and screenings, and providing the ophthalmic provider with needed information to accurately assess the patient's ocular health. Candidates must have the ability and willingness to travel to the practice's five locations located in the east Metro and western Wisconsin.

Essential Functions

  • Provide excellent customer service to patients and teammates
  • Respond appropriately within level of certification and promptly to patients questions
  • Efficiently and accurately work up patient for comprehensive and subspecialty optometrists and ophthalmologists
  • Efficiently and accurately perform testing necessary for AEC's premium products
  • Accurately document information gathered during exam in accordance with AEC's procedures and policies
  • Participate in advanced training of new technology to continue to provide the highest level of service to patients utilizing AEC's premium products; this may require afterhours work.
  • Assist providers in meeting governmental and coding requirements
  • Abide by all policies and procedures as outlined in AEC's employee handbook
  • Participate in regular team meetings to ensure effective team performance and advance inter-department communications; this may require afterhours work
  • Responsible for ongoing professional self-development

Other Essential Functions

  • Must be willing and able to work a variety of hours and work in the various locations as needed. The locations include: Hudson, Hugo, New Richmond, Stillwater, Woodbury and any partner facility
  • Must present self at the workstation, ready for work, at the scheduled time
  • Must manage personal issues during provided break times and keeps breaks with allotted time
  • Participates in department and company meetings, as requested
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

Education & Licensing

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required


  • 2-3 years experience as refracting technician preferred
  • COA, COT or COMT certification preferred
  • 1-2 years experience in a practice that performs refractive surgery preferred
  • Experience with an EHR system preferred

Job Specific Skills & Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the eye
  • Working knowledge of systemic diseases that affect the eye
  • Working knowledge of ocular diseases and their effect on vision and patient function
  • Comprehensive understanding of the theory and logic for conducting specific testing procedures
  • Understanding of refractive procedures, Advanced Technology Lenses, Refractive Inlays, etc.
  • Strong technical skills including but not limited to: lensometry, obtaining visual acuity, motility and versions, pupils, slit lamp functionality, multiple methods of eye pressure measurement (GAT, Tonopen, iCare), advanced retinoscopy and refractometry
  • Strong special testing skills including but not limited to: visual field testing, OCT, A-scan, topography, Contoura, Specular Microscopy, pachymetry and other special testing as indicated
  • Ability to multi-task and adhere to deadlines when faced with multiple interruptions and sometimes stressful situations
  • Can confidently establish priorities based on workload, focusing on attention to detail and accuracy
  • Capacity to analyze and problem-solve issues in order to identify areas of process improvement and increase efficiencies
