POST Certified Deputy - Detentions

Primary Responsibility: Under general supervision, performs general law enforcement work to enforce the laws --Local, State and Federal--and to safeguard the lives, property and rights of the residents of Gilpin County.

Supervised by: Sergeant

In absence of Corporal, use chain of command established by Gilpin County Sheriff's Office.

Main Job Duties:

  • Classifies and assigns inmates to jail housing, explains rules and regulations, maintains security and control of an assigned area of facility, prevents violence, supervises inmate activity, directs visitors, supervises distribution of meals and services to inmates, provides security in the public lobby and courtrooms, operates central control panel, prepares various reports and logs, conducts periodic inspections, and assumes other duties of Deputy Sheriff as assigned.
  • Evaluates and assigns inmates to housing locations in the detention facility, supervises inmates during booking process, advises inmates of rules and regulations, escorts inmates and locks prisoners in assigned housing locations.
  • Attends additional areas of detention facility maintaining security and control of inmates and jail. Prevents inmate violence, breaking up fights and subduing combative inmates as necessary. Performs crisis intervention as needed, including suicide prevention, etc. Reviews incidents from previous shift; and conducts cell searches for contraband as required.
  • Maintains control of inmates' activities including; supervising distributions of meals, commissary, exchange, medications and other items to inmates. Supervises visitation of inmates, assists visitors, and inspects items brought into jail for inmates.
  • Maintains peace and order in the courts and throughout the Gilpin County Justice Center to include responding to panic alarms and reports of physical or verbal altercations throughout the Justice Center.
  • Verifies identity and ensures authorized access to the Gilpin County Detention Facility.
  • Provides backup support for Patrol Deputies if the need should arise and there is sufficient coverage in Detentions at the time of the need.
  • Communicates with inmates including; giving information and directions, mediating disputes, advising of rights and processes, listening to and investigating inmates' complaints, and resolving inmates' conflicts and problems.
  • May supervise inmates on work assignments outside of detention facility.
  • Operates a central control center; panel and monitors, security cameras and television monitors to view areas of detention facility, as assigned. Does visual and audio surveillance of doors and activities of inmates and staff. Receives inquiries and provides information as requested. Controls outside entries, all doors and intercoms, ensuring entry and exit of authorized persons. Responds to fire alarms and panic alarms, determining the location of the incident and getting the assistance to that area.
  • Transports or escorts inmates within the detention facility and between criminal justice, medical, dental, and other public and governmental facilities. Maintains safety and security of County and District courtrooms and provides security for persons within the court complex.
  • Serves assigned court documents and maintains records of disposition.
  • Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing and database programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information on inmates.
  • Prepares various logs, forms and reports, documenting movement and activities of inmates, grievance allegations, incidents of violation of rules, notable behavior, potential safety hazards, problems with facility hardware, criminal activity, summons, etc.
  • Attends seminars, classes lectures, etc., as appropriate, to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the field of law enforcement.
  • Takes persons into custody on arrest warrants and makes arrests based on probable cause.
  • Maintains cleanliness of assigned workstation, uniform and weapon.
  • Provides basic medical attention in emergencies, including CPR, as required.
  • Maintains office proficiency standards in the use of firearms.

Additional Job Duties:

  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by Detentions Corporals or Sergeants, Captain or Undersheriff and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency situation.

Hours:

Must be available for shift work, to include weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage.

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School graduate or equivalent, or any equivalent combination of education and training that would provide the required knowledge and skills to perform the job.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Meets standards set forth in the Colorado Revised Statues.
  • Has knowledge of Colorado and federal criminal law, constitutional criminal procedure, and criminal investigations.

Ability to:

  • Accurately and effectively transmit and receive information that is necessary to the accomplishment of goals and objectives, including effective written and oral communications in English; and the ability to listen.
  • Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations making proper judgments as to the correct course of action.
  • Use tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Work well with others, and maintains a professional relationship with supervisors, subordinates, outside law enforcement personnel and the public.
  • Follow complex instructions.
  • Must be skilled and knowledgeable regarding methods and tactics to maintain security and order and to subdue unruly detainees and to control security breaches.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License without any restriction due to driving record. Must also be able to drive a county vehicle.
  • Must not have any felony convictions or misdemeanors designated by POST or any significant prior criminal activity.
  • Must pass background check, including traffic and criminal.

Certifications:

  • Is a Colorado Certified Peace Officer, or has all requirements necessary for, and nothing that would prevent, such certification within 30 days of employment, from an approved Colorado POST Academy.
  • CPR & First Aid certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Must possess FEMA ICS 100 and 700 certifications within 6 months of employment.
  • Obtain OSN within 6 months of request to CBI.
  • Obtain CCIC/NCIC and NIBRS Certification within 6 months of request to CBI.
  • Intoxilliyer Certification.
  • Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) Certification.
  • Range Certified.
  • Taser Certification.
  • Notary Certification.

Mental/Physical Requirements:

  • Typically requires: grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Work Environment can be stressful and sometimes life-threatening conditions.
  • A Deputy at all levels must be able to perform the entire essential job functions listed, unassisted, and at a pace or level of performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements. This necessitates a high level of physical abilities and perceptual senses to include vision, hearing, speaking, flexibility, strength, etc.

Experience:

No previous experience required.

Testing:

The written exam will be given on February 13, 2019 at 0900 hours sharp. Testing will consist of a written exam, background investigation, oral board interviews, psychological exam, pre-emplyment physical and drug screen. You must pass each individual phase to continue to the next level of the testing process.
