Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Fine & Performing Arts the Dance Mentor will be responsible for mentoring adults and students with intellectual and developmental disabilities that participate in the Fine and Performing Arts program. The Dance Mentor will instruct program participants dance movement, fitness activities, and provide performance opportunities. This person will provide a safe, rewarding, and creative environment. This position will require travel to specific locations for activities in the community.

This is a temporary position needed from approximatley from Mid-March through June 2019.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Mentor and teach traditional styles of dance and provide performance opportunities throughout the year to individuals served and oversee the daily operation of the program.
  2. Participate in direct care ratio and assist in daily direct care duties (i.e. eating, toileting, daily activities and bus duties).
  3. Guide, support, train and supervise direct care, part-time staff and volunteers.
  4. Implement requirements of Individual Support Plan (ISP).
  5. Work with Assistant Director to plan and coordinate dance performances through the year.
  6. Identify, plan and coordinate special performance groups.
  7. Represent the program on guest tours and community performances.
  8. Provide weekly/monthly program updates, monthly newsletter articles and quarterly participant progress reports.
  9. Attend weekly staff and one-on-one meetings.
  10. Coordinate, plan and oversee social dance events though out the year.
  11. Order program supplies in line with program annual budget and conduct inventories and maintain up-keep of all program equipment.
  12. Comply and understand all Federal, State and OSHA laws, policies and procedures.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will supervise Fine & Performing Arts Direct Care Staff.

 
Position Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to facilitate activities related to dance and dance instruction/expression.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, co-workers and supervisors (verbal and written).
  • Ability to care, respond and work with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Must possess social discernment to assess and understand other’s reactions and behaviors.
  • Must encompass professional demeanor.
  • Ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, gain knowledge and have initiative.
  • Ability to teach in a class room 80% of the day and to plan programs 20% of the day.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent with one (1) year of verifiable work experience in dance instruction of multiple styles of dance to include ballet, jazz, modern and other forms of dance as well as choreographic skills.
  • Preferred: Experience in working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
