Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. We provide academically rigorous, vibrant learning grounded in social justice and student centered pedagogy. Our entire community is committed to cultivating each student's unique talents and passions, providing myriad opportunities for students to discern and realize their individual intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual potential. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Position Summary
This is a one/fifth FTE; other employment opportunities at SHC available per candidates’ background.

DIRECTOR OF THE INNOVATION AND INQUIRY PROGRAM

The Director of the Innovation and Inquiry Program (i2) has primary responsibility for this academic and enrichment program aimed at discovering and developing SHC students’ curiosity, inventiveness, and sense of service through an exploration of science, technology, engineering and math. The four-year i2 program integrates SHC’s Lasallian Vincentian and college preparatory liberal arts studies with design thinking and 21st century learning strategies.

The Director of i2 ensures that i2 curriculum and activities consistently reflect the mission of the school and the program (below), facilitate student self-discovery, and model inquiry learning for the entire SHC community.

i2 Program Mission
The Inquiry & Innovation program is a rigorous four-year program designed to discover and develop the individual abilities and interests of students through science, technology, engineering, mathematics, design and service. The i2 Program encourages students to:

  • Expand their critical and creative thinking through science, mathematics, technology and design courses.

  • Cultivate their curiosity and interests through learning beyond the classroom.

  • Identify and leverage their abilities to serve as agents of change in the world.

Responsibilities and Duties: The Director of i2

  • Collaborates with the Assistant Principal for Academics to design the goals of the i2 program, to implement structures and activities to achieve those goals; and to evaluate how well the curriculum and enrichment activities are meeting those goals;

  • Collaborates with the Admissions Office to engage and place applicants in the i2 program who demonstrate:

    • Curiosity and an interest in experimentation / hands-on learning

    • High academic achievement (typically 3.5 GPA or above)

    • Exemplary standardized test scores (especially in the areas of math and science)

    • Willingness to serve as models of inquiry and innovation for the entire SHC community;

  • Collaborates with the i2 school counselor and the Director of Studies to schedule i2 students in their course of study, including

    • Four plus years of math, including ninth-grade Algebra Honors or Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry

    • Four plus years of science, including a dedicated ninth grade Physics course

    • A dedicated ninth-grade English course

    • A computer programming, design, robotics and/or tinkering course;

  • Facilitates the i2 Project, a design-thinking process incorporating four phases (Empathize, Imagine, Design and Create) and presentations in the spring;

  • Plans and implements at least one i2-related field trip, service project, or other community-building activity each semester for each grade level cohort;

  • Collaborates with the Director of Community Learning Partnerships to develop and place students in i2-related internships, externships and volunteer opportunities;

  • Collaborates with moderators for the success of other i2-related clubs and initiatives at SHC, including the Robotics Club, TEDxYouth@SHC, and the Student Launch Initiative;

  • Plans and implements summer workshops for each i2 grade level cohort, on such topics as community engagement, design thinking, creativity, gaming, fabrication, robotics, or biotechnology;

  • Reviews student records to confirm requirements such as maintenance of a 3.5 GPA at SHC, participation in i2 field trips, summer workshops, and internships;

  • Shares best practices in educational innovation, discovery learning, and STEM education with the SHC community.

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, math, programming, or science;

  • Experience working with high school students;

  • Experience directing a program;

  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and creatively to promote student learning;

Desired Qualifications

Master’s Degree;

Experience in a Catholic high or middle school setting;

Bachelor’s Degree required
