Description

SUMMARY
Inspects all new and replacement heating and air conditioning installations for residential, commercial and manufacturing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.
• Inspects all heating and air conditioning installations in residential, commercial, and manufacturing construction for compliance to State codes.
• Inspects replacement equipment in residential, commercial, and manufacturing existing structures.
• Inspects existing structures regarding current condition for condemnations.
• Identifies hazardous and dangerous conditions and take the necessary corrective action.
• Reads blueprints to assure compliance of architectural drawings.
• Makes decisions concerning problems, not covered in the code books, so as to conform to the intent of the codes.
• Resolves moderately complex problems encountered in the day to day inspections.
• Explains the codes and reasons for the codes to the public.
• Releases gas connection to utility companies.
• Maintains mileage and inspection logs.
• On call early mornings, evenings, and weekend for special projects, and for emergencies, e.g. natural disasters.

NON-ESSENTIAL / MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
• Assists other inspectors when needed.
• May serve on the Licensing Examination Board.
• Assumes additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
• High School Diploma or equivalent education required.
• Minimum of five years of experience in a related field. Holder of an active heating and air conditioning license preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED
• Thorough knowledge of the mechanical codes.
• Working knowledge of standard construction and installation procedures and materials.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints.
• Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
• Strong computer abilities including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS
• Valid Driver’s License required.
• Active heating and air conditioning license preferred.
• Wiling to attempt certification within two years, certified in either residential or commercial, or certified in both or as a combination inspector.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to wait on customers at counter for extended periods of time, stand, sit, talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools and controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in both office and field settings, with moderate inside temperatures and outside in all types of weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate in the office and loud in the field. The employee must be able to deal with the public directly. Employee drives car to building site. Entire office is smoke free.
