Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for fiber laser system assembly in both manufacturing and R&D settings. Main responsibilities include material inspection and preparation, electrical, mechanical, and optical fiber assembly, generating production test data, and preparing products for shipment. Additional responsibilities include assisting with various R&D activities in the fiber laser business unit. This position requires a self-motivated, detailed oriented individual with the ability to work in a busy and rapidly changing manufacturing environment. This position will be cross trained on multiple product lines. Although the location of the position is in Jessup, MD, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Build fiber amplifier and laser assemblies according to assembly instruction.
  • Ability to utilize sensitive production equipment such as fiber splicers, re-coaters and test and measurement instruments.
  • Maintain data systems to record and report test results.
  • Understand and follow work instructions, engineering drawings, and other material used for the production of complex systems involving electronics, mechanical assemblies and fiber components.
  • Perform incoming inspection for mechanical, electronics, and fiber components utilizing standard inspection tools.
  • Support R&D activities by building assemblies based on engineering instructions and performing engineering-designed tests.
  • Utilize online databases to transact material, and review drawings and bills of material.
  • Follow cleanroom protocol.
  • Properly handle critical and fragile optical components and sensitive laboratory equipment.
  • Provide continuous improvement feedback on procedures and processes.
  • Meet output and quality goals.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • More than 2 years of experience in production environment required.
  • Experience in the fiber optic industry is preferred.

Education:

  • High school diploma required. Further education or course-work in a related field is preferred.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficiency working with computers and Microsoft Office is required.
  • Familiarity with optical fiber splicing is preferred.
  • Familiarity with clean room protocol is preferred.
  • Basic hand soldering skills are desired.
