GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Early Learning Specialist provides training, modeling and curriculum support to ensure that Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms are meeting the highest level of quality.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct daily coaching sessions to provide on-site modeling and teacher observations of appropriate early educational practices and activities at assigned centers that support the ECS Coaching Support model.
  2. Model best practices and strategies in all domains of the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework.
  3. Follow the Head Start coaching planned content based on teacher need.
  4. Develop and provide trainings, as needed, on topics related to early childhood education and development and CLASS.
  5. Establish mentoring relationships with teachers that will result in further improvement of developmentally appropriate teaching skills.
  6. Assist teachers in developing curriculum activities, lesson plans, and routines that produce positive school readiness outcomes for children.
  7. Observe teachers and use reflective feedback principals to improve their performance.
  8. Assist in creating literacy-rich, developmentally appropriate, engaging learning environments in assigned centers.
  9. Assist the Center Manager and teaching staff, as needed.
  10. Communicates both in writing and verbally with teacher and Center Manager about the status of teachers and classrooms weekly.
  11. Assist teachers in collecting and analyzing assessment data.
  12. Monitor child portfolios and lesson plans to ensure compliance, timeliness, and quality.
  13. Assist in the evaluation of classrooms using CLASS, ITERS, ECERS, and other classroom monitoring tools.
  14. Assist with the execution of action plans developed though the assessment process.
  15. Document and track all professional development provided and complete certificates to document.
  16. Attend required workshops and in-service trainings and keep informed of current trends and new professional techniques through participating in professional workshops, conferences and seminars and by reading professional journals and publications, training and workshops/conferences related to early childhood development to increase knowledge of best practices.
  17. Advocate on behalf of Episcopal Children’s Services Head Start/ Early Head Start and children and families involved in the program.

  • This position reports to the Education Manager.
 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education
  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in education that includes ages K through 6, with 15 credit hours in early childhood education courses, and at least 480 hours experience teaching preschool-age children
  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in any field with 45 credit hours in early childhood education courses, with at least 480 hours of early education teaching experience
  • CLASS experience required with CLASS certification preferred

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of current practices in early childhood education with an emphasis in teacher-child interactions and using curriculum and assessments to plan and individualize
  • Knowledge of ECS Coaching model
  • Ability to articulate and model best teaching instructional strategies and practices.
  • Ability to motivate teachers to high levels of commitment and performance
  • Establish a relationship of mutual trust and respect with support staff, site coordinators and teaching staff
  • Ability to perform with little direct supervision
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and abuse-reporting procedures
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products at an intermediate to advanced level
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Ability to plan and organize work as well as maintain records, analyze data and prepare reports

LICENSES, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • CLASS certification

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Works in early childhood classroom settings
  • Ability to lead large group trainings
  • Local travel to multiple sites is required
  • Some nights and weekends for special events and training may be required

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
