Description

Job Summary:

The Residential Counselor is responsible for daily operations of the program milieu, assuring a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment that allows for participants' growth. The Residential Counselor is also responsible for safety practices, enforcing and monitoring policy and procedures. These duties may also include assisting participants with administration of their medications, and overseeing the daily living skills such as health, wellness, and hygiene of the participants and managing schedules or appointments.
The Residential Counselor builds relationships with participants who have complex lives that may include drug and alcohol use. The Residential Counselor will provide services within a strengths-based, culturally-sophisticated, family-friendly environment that values respect, accountability, compassion, excellence, diversity, innovation, and integrity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Participant Care and Supervision: 1) Provides active supervision, of the general care and safety of participants and instruct their program participation by providing a consistent, nurturing environment with clear expectations and limits. 2) Assists in the development and implementation of positive behavioral interventions and in the implementation of treatment plan goals. 3) Participates in supporting participants' progress through attending groups, treatment reviews, and special staffings as needed. 4) Provides transportation for participants to any off-site activities, medical appointments, or individual/family therapy as needed. 5) Assists in the team approach to planning and implementing program needs of recreational, skills building and community integration activities. 6) Provides conflict resolution/crisis intervention at all times when other staff are unavailable, alerting emergency personnel (i.e. police, fire) as needed. 7) Aid in the development of a pro-social community of mutually supportive individuals, resolving tenant conflicts and preventing or addressing lease violations.

Documentation/Administrative Duties: 1) Completes same day documentation of mental health progress notes, incident reports and other documentation of all services rendered in accordance with agency policy and quality standards for the position. 2) Maintains participant records in an orderly and timely manner including effective use of identified Electronic Health Record systems. 3) Verifies all aspects of documentation meet or exceed agency guidelines. 4) Meets all HIPAA standards in providing PHI to others. 5) Completes other documentation as directed by their supervisor.
Compliance: 1) Maintains excellent professional boundaries and adheres to all professional ethical standards including abuse reporting, maintenance of participant confidentiality and FFYC. 2) Adheres to all agency and program policies including Boundary Code of Ethics, Core Competencies, Code of Conduct, Employee Handbook and state and federal regulations.

Professional Development: 1) Attends weekly individual and group supervision, staff meetings and actively works toward developing professional skills. 2) Participates in all required agency mandated trainings including but not limited to, first aid/CPR,

Safety: 1) Report any unsatisfactory conditions in the care and upkeep of the residential facility to the Program Supervisor and/or Maintenance/Facility Department.

Other Duties: 1) Ensures the community use areas of the property are clean includes completing chores not completed by participants i.e. picking up trash and cleaning the kitchen. 2) Other related duties as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:
Required

1. High School Diploma or GED.
2. Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends when needed.
3. Ability to work as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary mental health team.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of the developmental milestones of children or youth.
5. Clean driving record; current CA Driver's License required, or ability to obtain within 10 days after hired.
6. Basic computer and keyboarding competence with the ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred
1. B.A. Degree in social science discipline or two (2) years' work experience.
2. Experience with target population (youth, young adults, intellectually disabled youth, etc.) and/or in a milieu setting.
3. One (1) year or more experience with program target population (intellectually disabled, homeless, teens or young adults, SED).
4. One (1) year or more experience with program modality (example: school-based, residential, mobile/community-based, assertive community treatment, wraparound, etc.)

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet and, at all times, maintained within safe California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CAL/OSHA) standards.
Communication
1. Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, supervisors, and participants.
2. Prepares clearly and concisely written reports and summaries.
3. Must be able to comprehend, follow, and clearly convey instructions to others.
4. Must be computer proficient and be able to work on a computer for up to 5 hours per week.
Physical Activities
1. Must be able to bend, lift as much as 25 lbs., and walk up to a mile at one time.
2. Must be able to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
3. Must be able to physically hold aggressive participants, if required and trained, according to principles taught at the agency.
4. Must be licensed and have the ability and skill to drive cars, vans, or other vehicles.
5. Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies, and to learn and implement self-defense maneuvers (or other agency approved training).
6. Must be able to physically monitor participants to ensure they do not hurt themselves or others.
7. The job has a potential for injury or harm and the ability to assess and avoid threats posed by participants and the community is necessary to maintain safety.
