General Summary:

The Parking Services Agent is responsible for directing vehicles and greeting guests in the parking lots next to the Zoo main gate.

Essential Functions:

Primary Function:

  • Interact in a consistently pleasant and helpful manner to fellow employees, guests, vendors, and other visitors of the Zoo and demonstrate the highest standards of internal and external customer service;
  • Help assign duties to seasonal departmental staff;
  • Direct cars, buses and other traffic into appropriate parting, drop off or delivery areas;
  • Open and close parking lots as necessary;
  • Monitor all parking areas to prevent break-ins and/or vandalism of vehicles and Zoo property;
  • Keep all parking areas and entrance areas clean and free of litter;
  • Place directional signs, cones and barricades as needed;
  • Direct vehicles and pedestrians with flags and other hand-held devices;
  • Work in and/or help out in any aspect of Zoo operations as directed when appropriate;
  • Ensure guest safety at all times;
  • Perform other duties as assigned; and,
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.

Communication (Internal and External):

  • Responsible for keeping Director, Managers, and Supervisors fully updated on any issues that may occur during daily operations;
  • Work closely with contracted temp services and staff to ensure adherence to all Zoo policies and procedure;
  • Communicate with the Security Department by radio contact as needed following Zoo radio regarding potential threats;
  • Greet guests and respond appropriately to guests' questions, comments, or concerns in a friendly, professional, and informed manner;
  • Monitor unauthorized persons and loitering in or around the parking lots and notify security department of suspicious persons or activities; and,
  • Contact an appropriate Security staff member necessary to resolve security issues by radio contact as needed to communicate information.

Management of Resources (financial, human resources, facilities):

  • Assist in training new and returning seasonal staff in policies and procedures, reinforcing the training on an ongoing basis;
  • Assist in maintaining accurate documentation in compliance with safety standards to include daily checklists, maintenance logs, and training hours logs; and,
  • Monitor guests' behavior to ensure their safety on and around the parking lots near the Main Gate.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Hospitality:

  • Friendly disposition;
  • Possess a positive and patient attitude; and
  • Possess excellent verbal communication skills.

 

Education:

  • High school diploma preferred; and,
  • Minors (14 to 17 years of age) may be considered for employment by the Human Resources Department at the Zoo.  However, minors are required to furnish an authorized work permit agreement with the necessary signatures to legally work at the Zoo. 

 

Experience/Training:

  • Minimum of six months related experience and/or training.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to stand, walk and/or run, and remain active for an eight hour shift;
  • Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed;
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; and,
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 25 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

 

Equipment:

  • Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including telephone, two-way radio, etc.

 

Traits Desirable:

  • Possess a clear comprehension of vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow;
  • Possess an outgoing personality with the ability to approach guests and take charge of challenging situations;
  • Ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds;
  • Ability to identify and resolve guest issues; and,
  • Ability to work independently and stay productive with minimal direct supervision.
