SUMMARY

This position will provide technical support to the historical division and is primarily responsible for assisting with collection management of the collection to include documenting and preparing historical artifacts for storage and for use by researchers or exhibitions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts work with regard to acquisition, handling, cataloging, storage and conservation of material objects and associated materials
  • Compiles, organizes and preserves records and supporting documentation for all items in Historical division collections
  • Enters and maintains electronic information on Historical Collection objects in collections management database Ke EMu
  • Performs and provides technical internal and external research assistance services
  • Represents the NMHM in applicable professional settings, including meetings with tours, donors, researchers, high-level administrators, and military personnel, where skilled and polished communication is expected, and discretion is required
  • Contributes to other Museum functions
  • Conducts and conveys research on collections care and management
  • Develops guidelines for policy implementation
  • Makes contributions to exhibits and programs by participation on planning, working with exhibits and production staff
  • Advises on handling and displaying of historical artifacts
 
Position Requirements
  • Master's degree in Museum studies with specialization in History of Science, technology, medicine, or related field
  • 5 Years relevant museum of collections management experience. Professional knowledge of standard museum practices, packing and transportation of museum artifacts and fine arts, care, handling and storage of museum objects and relative environmental and security requirements
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point applications
  • Ability to work in confined collections storage areas, ability to climb ladders and use basic materials handling equipment such as dollies, pallet jacks, flatbed carts, hand drills, etc
  • Incumbent will also be required to operate forklift and elevated platform in performance of duties
  • Ability to safely lift supplies or museum objects weighing 30-40 pounds also needed
