SUMMARY

This position supports the NMHM Deputy Director of Communications with marketing and public relations activities and is responsible for key elements of the museum's communications programs, including: successful promotion of museum programs; content development, such as articles, news releases, website content and other marketing materials. The coordinator will conduct other routine public affairs tasks, such as: media relations, to include responding to media queries and supporting media visits, and photo shoots; leading tours for groups of any sort or size. Works occasionally evening, weekends and holidays; supports all programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Participate in docent training; support volunteer training efforts in areas of public affairs, marketing and communications; support volunteer recruitment efforts
  • Manages placement of program and event information to program the museum's recurring and special events, assuring widest possible dissemination of program information to all target audiences in a timely manner; cultivates and proposes new outlets and methods for program information dissemination; invests in success of program promotion in furtherance of stated museum goals
  • Writes assigned articles/press releases, suggesting and pursuing opportunities for public awareness of NMHM programs; Support the staff of the NMHM with marketing and public relations activities by writing assigned articles/press releases
  • As assigned, independently write or edit communications products, to include but not limited to ad copy, video scripts, radio public service announcements, press releases, brochures, news articles and other NMHM information and promotional marketing materials
  • Drafts and circulates the monthly e-newsletter
  • Carries out story placement projects
  • Handles media requests in the absence of the Deputy Director for Communications
  • Offers tours to media and groups, as directed
  • Maintains press lists and mailing databases
  • Coordinates and executes communications assignments, such as mailings, telephone calling, and email campaigns
  • This position is expected to work weekends, evenings and occasional holidays as needed
  • Supports film and photo shoots
  • Monitors web site; writes and updates content for web site
  • Acts as a point of contact for webmaster
  • Tracks media coverage and advertising
  • Participates in arranging and executing high-profile activities such as VIP tours, special events, etc
  • Represents NMHM at professional meetings and in settings, as requested in the absence of the Deputy Director for Communications where skilled, polished, and professional communication skills are required
  • Staff the NMHM trade show exhibition booth as requested
  • Assists with creation and assembly of museum/exhibit-related materials, such as press kits and collateral marketing materials
  • Provides subject matter expertise to all areas of the museum mission when requested
  • Maintains and updates communications office files, including news clips, videos, slides, photographs, and advertising; completes other administrative projects, such as purchase requests for services and supplies
  • Reviews exhibition copy for proofreading check if requested
  • Attends regular meetings, or attends other meetings as needed or directed
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations, communications, journalism or similar field
  • 2 to 3 years public affairs/public relations experience (internships may be counted as experience); Position requires writing sample review
  • Desired experience includes working in a DoD or military agency public affairs office is highly preferred
  • Position requires a NACI (CAC only)
  • Will be required to furnish published articles when applying for this position
