R&D Software Development Intern, Science and Technology Council - Summer 2019 (Academy Gold)

Job Summary:

The Academy Science and Technology Council is developing architecture and supporting tools for digital motion picture mastering applications, exploring the effects of new motion picture lighting technologies, and the impact of new technologies on the future of the cinematic experience.

The R&D Software Development Intern will support various Academy Projects, and in doing so, will:

  • Gain experience with innovative image-processing technologies.
  • Learn about current trends in motion picture production and post-production, and the associated technologies.
  • Learn about the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES).
  • Participate in software prototyping and development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the maintenance of robust software development and distribution architecture.
  • Assist in the creation of image-processing algorithms and software tools.
  • Assist in prototyping software solutions for motion picture capture, post-production, and display technologies as they relate to enhancing cinematic experience.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements
  • Enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s or master’s university degree program in computer engineering or computer science.
  • A keen interest in motion picture technology and motion picture production workflows.
  • Interest in computer vision, computational photography, computer graphics, image processing, and software development.
  • Deep knowledge of programming methodologies and algorithm development.
  • Experience applying the principles of linear and nonlinear systems, inferential statistics, regression analysis, and matrix algebra.
  • High proficiency in writing platform-independent software using the C++, C, or Java programming languages.
  • Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming concepts and languages.
  • Experience with the Cmake build system.
  • Experience developing software for mobile platforms including iOS and Android.
  • Proficiency with Linux and Mac OS X terminal environments, Unix shells (bash, zsh, csh, etc), shell scripting, and scripting languages such as AWK, SED, Perl, and Python.
  • Experience with Mathworks Matlab helpful.
  • Experience with GPU programming using Cuda or OpenCL.
  • Experience using Git version control and Github.

This internship is part of the Academy Gold Program, an 8-week summer internship enhancement program that incorporates learning opportunities including an intensive two-day orientation, weekly panels, exclusive networking events, workshops, screenings, and mentorship opportunities with Academy members.
