Oral History Archival Intern - Summer 2019 (Academy Gold)

Job Summary:
We are seeking an organized, enthusiastic Intern to assist the Oral History Projects
department and to support the development of a large preservation and access initiative
specifically for oral histories with filmmakers. The focus will be in preparing audiovisual
interviews that have been deposited at the Academy Film Archive for future access.


Supervised by the Sr. Archivist of Oral History Projects, the Intern will focus on: collection
processing; interview logging and metadata capture; and organizing related material,
such as transcripts, images, clips, and interview summaries. The Intern will also have the
opportunity to provide input on the development of an Oral History Digital Archive project
and the creation of a controlled vocabulary specific to film industry-related interviews.
This position offers the opportunity to learn the functional and operational aspects of an
archival oral history initiative.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting Sr. Archivist with assessing and processing collections.
  • Processing legacy records (paper & electronic).
  • Assistance with item and carrier-level cataloging in Adlib.
  • Inventory of audiovisual access copies.
  • Timecode indexing of interviews from the Visual History Program collection.
  • Gathering images and highlight clips.
  • Photo cataloging and curation.
  • Writing interview summaries, abstracts and bios, and collection profiles.
  • Assisting with organization and addition of controlled vocabulary terms specific to motion picture crafts.
  • Assisting user testing of PST: LA/LA website.
 
Position Requirements
  • Graduate student of moving image archive studies or library science or undergraduate film student with a strong interest in moving image archive studies or library science with a focus on audiovisual archives.
  • Knowledge of and interest in international film history.
  • Experience and/or interest in cataloging.
  • Data entry and file management experience.
  • Familiarity with spreadsheets (including Excel and Google Docs).
  • Ability to learn new software.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, multitasking, and project management skills.
  • Bilingual preferred.

This internship is part of the Academy Gold Program, an 8-week summer internship enhancement program that incorporates learning opportunities including an intensive two-day orientation, weekly panels, exclusive networking events, workshops, screenings, and mentorship opportunities with Academy members.
