TITLE: Summer Student - Dr. Darcy Fehlings

STATUS: Temporary Full Time

PROGRAM: Bloorview Research Institute

SALARY: $14.00 per hour

The Ward Summer Student Research program provides an opportunity to experience a unique interdisciplinary mentorship experience. Successful incumbents will have opportunities to work with their mentor on a research project, attend our Lunch ‘n' Learns and participate in the annual Ward Summer Student Research Day where they will have an opportunity to present their findings to the organization and its visitors.

The student will be a member of the CP Discovery Lab - an interdisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians focused on children and youth with cerebral palsy (CP). The student will assist with the development and update of the Dystonia in Cerebral Palsy Care Pathway, developed in partnership with the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. A Care Pathway is a practical summary, including an algorithm, of evidence informed guidelines or the best evidence, for an aspect of care/services for individuals with childhood-onset disabilities to inform clinical practice. The student will be responsible for updating a systematic review examining the latest literature, summarizing new findings and integrating new information into the Care Pathway under the guidance of Dr. Fehlings, the Team Lead for the Dystonia in Cerebral Palsy Care Pathway.

The student will also assist with the start-up and execution of a study that examines the use of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) paired with constraint therapy in children with Hemiplegic CP to improve hand function. This role will involve direct contact with children with CP and/or their caregivers to facilitate the 2-week camp environment of the study. Furthermore, the incumbent may be assigned the following duties: a review of the literature, data cleaning, analyses, manuscript writing, and reference/bibliography management. The student will gain practical experience in the process of clinical research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly assist clinicians and staff with clinical research study
  • Data cleaning, coding, analysis
  • Manuscript preparation with bibliographic/reference management
  • General administrative and clerical functions to support projects including some responsibilities as they relate to the research ethics board
  • Report writing, preparation of lay summaries
  • Organization of research meetings & distribution of agendas/minutes
  • Additional duties assigned as required

Qualifications

    • Students must be enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of an undergraduate degree program or enrolled in medical school
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 75% or over
    • Able to utilize skills learned in academic studies in this position (e.g. statistical analyses). Documentation of introductory level course in statistics required
    • Able to communicate effectively with staff and colleagues
    • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
    • Demonstrates ability to work as part of a team and be a team player
    • Shows accuracy and attention to detail
    • Able to organize work to ensure deadlines are met and follow-up is complete
    • Has working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint & Excel
    • Applies data management skills and principles
    • Previous experience working with children and/or children with disabilities preferred
