About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQIA+) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.

Position Bilingual Health Navigator (Portuguese & English)  
Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  

Reporting to the Director of Prevention for Sexual Health Programs, the Bilingual Health Navigator provides outreach, risk-reduction counseling and HIV/Hepatitis C/STI screening services and linkage to care services in English and Portuguese, with a focus on young adult gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM). The Bilingual Health Navigator also provides follow-up counseling and supported referrals for clients who are HIV-positive and those who are at high-risk of infection, and is pro-active in designing and implementing community outreach initiatives to find and assist community members in need of services.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Provide Direct Services

  • Screen and triage callers and walk-in clients by assessing risk for HIV, STI and viral hepatitis exposure;
  • Provide pre- and post-test counseling to those seeking HIV testing, STI screening/treatment and viral hepatitis education, screening or vaccination;
  • Provide extended or multi-session counseling sessions for HIV-positive and high-risk HIV-negative clients when appropriate, including through the use of evidence-based interventions such as ARTAS and Personal Cognitive Counseling.
  • Conduct serum testing for HIV, HCV and syphilis, performing phlebotomy.
  • Perform antibody screening using finger-stick rapid test kits, when appropriate.
  • Perform Health Navigation, making supported referrals, and accompanying clients to service sites when appropriate, to address the full spectrum of client needs.
  • Co-lead short-term or drop-in psycho-educational groups, especially those targeting especially young Brazilian and other Portuguese-speaking men who have sex with men

2. Participate in Planning and Implementation of New Initiatives

  • Participate in program planning through interdisciplinary team meetings to design and implement community outreach initiatives and screening events to reach members of at-risk communities, especially young Brazilian and other Portuguese-speaking men who have sex with men
  • Collaborate with clinical providers to coordinate culturally competent referrals;
  • Attend continuing education seminars, staff in-services and stay abreast of relevant literature to maintain familiarity with trends in prevention services.
  • Assist in drafting/editing Portuguese-language program materials.
  • Make connections and build referral relationships with Fenway Health providers and community organizations that serve young Latinx MSM.

3. Meet Agency Participatory Expectations

  • Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as needed to perform outreach in ways that best serve at-risk communities.
  • Adhere to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality.
  • Provide appropriate and accurate documentation in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to all agency and departmental policies and procedures .
  • Attend staff, department meetings and individual and clinical supervision as required.
  • Collaborate with internal and external colleagues performing related work.
  • Attend trainings, in-services, meetings and seminars to maintain knowledge about key topics in HIV/substance abuse prevention.
  • Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities as requested.
  • Adhere to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identify potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and take measures to rectify the situation.

Position Requirements


  • Minimum two-years relevant work experience. Note: A Bachelor’s degree plus relevant experience may substitute for the minimum work experience requirement.
  • Fluency in both English and Portuguese required; bicultural preferred
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to learn and perform phlebotomy (with prior competence preferred but not required)
  • Substantial knowledge of and experience with the Brazilian community in greater Boston, especially those men who identify as gay, bisexual or who have had sex with other men.
  • Ability to manage clinically and emotionally challenging situations with utmost professionalism, care and discretion
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of individuals and communities at risk for HIV -- especially men who have sex with men, transgender people, injection drug users, people of color, those who are foreign-born and may be undocumented, and those who are homeless or unstably housed.
  • Experience providing HIV or substance abuse education preferred but not required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize assigned duties, and keep written records
  • Ability to work independently and in small groups
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment preferred
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work within a team-based environment
  • Strong interest in LGBT health

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to meet the following physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations:
  • Travel to community events and venues such health fairs, neighborhoods, bars and nightclubs to perform outreach activities, including on late evenings and weekends
  • Sit at a computer station and use a keyboard for extended periods of time.
  • Lift and carry materials with a weight up to 15-20 pounds
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment
