Description

The Smart Centres Creative Arts March Break Respite Camp is a day camp for children and youth with physical disabilities and developmental delays. Participants will interact and play through music, visual art, movement and drama. The goal of the program is to enable participants to have fun through creative, sensory and social experiences and to provide respite relief to families during the March Break school holiday (March 11-15, 2019). Successful candidates must be flexible to participate in training and meetings starting in February 2019 after business hours or on weekends. Additional, mandatory full-team training session is being held on Saturday, March 2, 2019.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance for assigned client(s) (engagement, toileting, feeding, focus, behaviour, activity tasks etc.) as required
  • Facilitate clients fullest possible participation in the program
  • Assist with other clients’ needs as necessary
  • Ensure safe participation of clients
  • Supervise lunch/break times of clients when necessary
  • Contribute to team/program meetings and discussions
  • Collaborate with program staff, volunteers and families
  • Work as a team member with the larger team, including participation in group activities
  • Support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advance a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Encourage and support participants in communication, working with others, problem solving, decision making, task planning and organizing, and peer socialization
  • Implement behaviour management strategies effectively
  • Ability to work in a busy environment which can be physically demanding (lifts and transfers)
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a College Diploma or University Degree in a Health Service field or an equivalent of relevant experience and practical knowledge
  • Basic CPR certification – Basic Rescuer (C) certificate (or Heart Saver)
  • Experience working with children or youth with physical disabilities and/or developmental delays
  • Experience with recreation and/or creative arts (music, art, drama) facilitation and participation preferred
  • Demonstrates ability to be flexible, to assess the needs of individuals and to respond quickly to needs
  • Demonstrates initiative and self-direction to work in a 1:1 or small group setting
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide activities and support to clients based on established recommendations
  • Demonstrates ability to work in collaboration with staff/clients/families
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to perform lifts, transfer or position participants independently, as needed
  • Ability and experience in feeding and toileting participants independently, as needed
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate an asset
