PLS Transmission Lineman Apprentice

The Lineman Apprentice is responsible for learning and performing basic aspects of the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead electrical transmission lines. This position performs work on non-energized lines while operating cranes, man lift equipment, bucket trucks or other specialized equipment. This is generally assigned to a specific project to perform work such as:

  • Learn and assist with the construction, installation, maintenance and replacement of poles, anchors, crossarms, pins, cut-outs, and other overhead pole components.
  • Learn and assist with the installation, maintenance and replacement of transformers, reclosers, capacitors, regulators, step-downs and other overhead pole equipment.
  • Learn and assist with the clipping or unclipping of overhead ground wire and conductor, arm replacement, marker ball installation, bird diverter installation, full tension splices, sleeve repair, tower numbering, cross arm replacement, insulator replacement, and conductor cut in.
  • Learn and assist with the set up and operate wire tensioners, rope rigs, and other wire stringing equipment.
  • Learn and assist with the operation of bucket trucks, digger derricks, excavation equipment, and other equipment.
  • Learn and assist with the erecting structures, setting poles and anchors, and stringing and sagging conductor.
  • Learn how to climb wood, steel, and concrete structures.
  • Assist with inspecting lines, poles and equipment for signs of damage or wear.
  • Learn the efficient and proper use of all tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Learn the specifics of using all high voltage equipment and ensure all PPE is in good working order and meets both OSHA and company safety requirements.
  • Learn how to read and interpret site plans, construction drawings, schedules, and scopes of work.
  • Understand DOT and OSHA standards, as well as company-specific standards.
  • Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements


  • High school diploma/GED required


  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in the utility industry is preferred

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited electrical lineworker program preferred
  • Enrollment in our Journeyman Lineman Apprenticeship Program is preferred

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Able to follow all written and oral job plans and instructions
  • Must be safety focused and willing to learn
  • Able to anticipate needs and proactively offer solutions
  • Able to make sound decisions and work under close or minimal supervision
