Substation Technician

Description

The Substitution Technician is responsible for the installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical substation equipment. This position may perform work in energized and non-energized environments while operating fork lifts, man lifts, skid steers, excavation equipment, and other specialized equipment. This position may teach and instruct lower classifications and is generally assigned to a specific project.

  • Installing grounding grids, equipment grounds, structures, fencing and control centers.
  • Layout of foundation layouts, set up, bolt placements and pouring concrete.
  • Cable pulling, wire labeling, striping cables.
  • Erection of steel supports, structures, dead ends, bus stands, and switch stands.
  • Installing PVC and metal conduit runs, above- and below-grade, and trenwa.
  • Bus installation by assisting with bending, cutting, cleaning, connecting pipes.
  • Assist in wire stringing by setting up, pulling, deadending, and cutting wire and installing compression or bolted connections.
  • Installing high voltage switches, CCVT, power transformers, lightning arrestors, and metering equipment.
  • Clean and prepare job site, including loading and unloading materials
  • Operate a variety of tools and machines including but not limited to: forklifts, skid steers, compactors, manlifts, trenchers, power drills, grinders, blowtorches, saws, and pressure washers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma/GED required

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in electrical substations required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in electrical substations preferred

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License preferred
  • Journey Certification is preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Able to follow and provide written and oral job plans and instructions
  • Must be safety focused
  • Must understand minimal approach distance while working in energized areas
  • Must be familiar with various hand and power tools
  • Able to anticipate needs and proactively offer solutions
  • Able to make sound decisions and work independently
  • Able to make decisions in an emergency situation
