Substation Apprentice

Working under moderate supervision, the Apprentice III performs the duties of a Substation Technician within the context of the training requirements and limitations of the third level of the PLH Group Power Delivery Apprenticeship Program (PDP). The PDP Apprentice III will be required to successfully participate in and learn through a structured apprentice training program to gain the knowledge and ability to perform all aspects of Substation construction, operations and maintenance.

Essential Funtions

  • Install grounding grids, equipment grounds, structures, fencing and control centers.
  • Assist in the layout of foundations, set up, bolt placements and pouring concrete.
  • Pull cable, label wires, strip cables, and terminate cables.
  • Assist in the erection of steel supports, structures, dead ends, bus stands, and switch stands.
  • Install PVC and metal conduit runs, above- and below-grade, and trenwa.
  • Assist in bus installation by assisting with bending, cutting, cleaning, connecting pipes.
  • Assist in wire stringing by setting up, pulling, deadending, and cutting wire and installing compression or bolted connections.
  • Assist in installing high voltage switches, CCVT, power transformers, lightning arrestors, and metering equipment.
  • Clean and prepare job site, including loading and unloading materials
  • Assist in reading blueprints and understanding electrical symbols.
  • Operate a variety of tools and machines including but not limited to: forklifts, skid steers, compactors, manlifts, trenchers, power drills, grinders, blowtorches, saws, and pressure washers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements


  • High school diploma or GED


  • At least two years substation experience

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Once eligable must enroll in Power Delivery Apprenticeship Program
  • Valid Class A or C driver license - Preferred

Knowledge and skills:

  • Must have knowledge and understanding of minimal approach distance while working in energized areas.
  • Familiarity with various hand and power tools.
  • Able to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to follow written and oral job plans and instructions.
  • Must be safety focused
  • Ability to make sound decisions and work independently
  • Ability to mentor and occasionally direct the work of others - Preferred
  • Ability to anticipate needs and proactively offer solutions - Preferred
