Avionics Manufacturing Engineer 

Description

The person filling this position will lead manufacturing related activities on military and civil avionics and aerospace product lines. The type of hardware produced at Extant Aerospace is often complex, containing circuit card assemblies (CCAs), microelectronic assemblies, cable harnesses and higher level system assemblies.

Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed:

  • Interfacing with Program Management, Product Transition Managers, and Production personnel in support of the introduction and sustainment of acquired licensed product lines
  • Planning and requesting manpower/equipment/process resources
  • Generating assembly documentation and directing support personnel in the day-to-day execution of the manufacturing tasks.
  • Candidate will assist with high visibility manufacturing efforts with formal cost and schedule responsibilities and direct customer interface.
  • Support process improvement initiatives of technical and operational nature.
  • Design and develop manufacturing and engineering tools, strategies and systems.
  • Plan and support the build and modification of electronics systems including procurement support, assembly method/work instructions generation, tooling design support, material/process development, facilities/equipment planning, and resolution of manufacturing, quality and reliability issues.
  • Estimate manufacturing costs, determine time standards, and make recommendations for tooling and process requirements of new or existing product lines.
  • Support the root cause and corrective action process.
  • Write and develops programs for automated SMT pick and place machines
  • Selects or designs tools and fixtures to meet specifications for the use in microelectronic processing equipment. (including panelizing boards)
  • Writes operating instructions and work instructions from existing documentation program, and prepares for implementation of a new documentation program.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace or Industrial Engineering plus minimum of 6 years industry experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with high reliability electronic assembly processes for SMT CCAs (Screen Print, Koh Young, Pick & Place, Mass Reflow, AOI, X-Ray), Through-hole (Wave, Selective Solder, VCD, CS400), microelectronic assembly processes, cable harness, GERBERS approval process and mechanical.
  • Experience implementing Lean/Six Sigma techniques (DOE, Value Stream Mapping, FMEA, DMAIC, Root Cause Analysis)
  • Experience with J-STD-001 and IPC-610 criteria
  • Experience with GERBERS approval process

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Background in the manufacturing of electronics for high reliability military and government systems is preferred.
  • Background in developing manufacturing processes and transferring such to production is preferred.
  • Knowledge of MIL/ IPC workmanship and performance standards related to electronic assemblies is a plus
  • Good communication skills including the ability to deliver effective presentations to peers, management and customers in a fast paced environment are preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to find root cause of manufacturing process problems, workmanship defects, mechanical test failures, etc. is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The individual must be capable of working on production and breadboard electronics, to include soldering of modern electrical components, working with mechanical fasteners such as screws, bolts and nuts, be capable of reading part numbers on electrical components such as integrated circuits (with viewing assistance), be able to differentiate color codes on resistors and to differentiate wire colors in a wire bundle, to be capable of carrying equipment up to 25 pounds for reasonable distances, electrical test equipment and environmental test equipment, to be able to type on a computer keyboard and to use a computer mouse or other suitable pointing device and to travel in automobiles or common air carriers for travel purposes. To the extent possible, accommodations to those incapable of meeting these requirements shall be provided.
