Description

Assists teacher in the implementation of educational curriculum, goals and objectives, classroom activities and parent involvement.  When appropriate, assists teacher by interpreting.

Assists in the fulfillment of the agency's vision, "For Those We Serve", by empowering individuals to thrive as healthy, self-sufficient and contributing members of our communities.

Assists Teacher or Teacher Director in tasks such as toileting, meals and snacks, room set-up, cleaning of furniture and equipment, safety, etc.

Assists with planning of curriculum activities and implement language activities as assigned.

Develops skills in methods of teaching and as skills are gained, take more responsibility in classroom planning and preparation.

Assists teacher with planning and implementation of curriculum goals for children with various levels of disability.

Assists in completing tasks, sign in/sign out, Child Plus, and Developmental Screenings and all other duties necessary for the maintenance of a smoothly running classroom.

Assumes leadership role in absence of teacher as assigned by Teacher Director or Center Director.

Confers with appropriate staff member prior to intervention in any potentially stressful situations with families.

Participates in home visits, parent/teacher conferences and case conferences. Acts as interpreter when appropriate.

Attends and participate in scheduled center meetings, staff inservices and required trainings/workshops.

Adheres to the American With Disabilities Act (ADA-1992) which prohibits discriminatory actions toward children and/or adult with disabilities.  In particular, children with disabilities are enrolled in the classroom as mandated by Federal Law.

Maintains strict compliance with universal precautions in the classroom or during home visits and when administering first aid.

Serves as a bus monitor.

Assists in the preparation, service and clean-up of meals and snacks.

Maintains confidentiality of records and information on Head Start staff, children and families.

Performs a variety of tasks as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

High school diploma or GED.

TA I - minimum of 12 units in Child Development/ECE and enrolled in six additional units in Child Development classes within the next two concurrent semesters.One year related work experience (12 working months in a full-time position) with pre-school age children in a classroom setting preferred.

TA II - miniminimum of 24 college units, 18 of which are in Child Development/ECE. Two years of related work experience (24 working months in a full-time position) with pre-school age children in a classroom setting.

Bilingual in English/Spanish or English/Hmong/Lao or others as required.

Valid California Driver’s License, acceptable driving record, and automobile with minimum liability insurance by State Law. Proof of insurance will be required.

Physical examination, TB screening clearance and signed federal criminal record declaration are required within seven days of employment. 

Fingerprint clearance under Title 22 regulations, and criminal record statement, background checks as needed, and reference checks are required prior to employment.

Former Early Head Start/Head Start parents preferred.

Employment in Head Start is contingent upon approval of the Policy Council.
