Reports to

Director of Revenue and Reinbursemnt

Major tasks, duties and responsibilities:

  • Experience in medical billing and coding, preferably in a mental health environment

  • Experience with various payers such as Medicaid, Medicare, commercial insurance as well as managed care plans.

  • Enters charges accurately and expeditiously to ensure proper records handling and fast payment responses

  • Responsible for preparation and submission of claims and invoices

  • Post payments in a timely manner

  • Ensures billing rejections and denials are followed up on and resolved timely

  • Research and resolve client billing problems or issues

  • Verify Insurance coverage of patients

  • Works with patients to develop self-pay arrangements

  • Focus on Accounts Receivables to ensure timely collection

  • Knowledge of the expected payment for each service from each insurance contract

  • Experience in what is billable to the patient or another third party and what needs to be written off for contractual adjustments; knows how to post these in billing software

  • Experience in dealing with Insurance appeals for additional payment of denied or underpaid claims

  • Knowledge of compliance with the rules and regulations of each contracted MCP and Insurance Plan

  • Knowledge of remittance advices or explanations of benefits

  • Maintains and works to improve relationships with all contacts (patients, physician, third-party payors and staff to achieve excellent customer service)

  • Customizes billing policies and procedures for position

  • Daily contact with clients and/or insurance companies on claim related issues and balances

 
Position Requirements

Education

High school diploma, some college coursework a plus

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • 3-5 years experience in medical billing and collections, as well as insurance verification.

  • Medical Coding certificate preferred

  • Previous experience with mental health billing preferred

  • Exemplary attendance

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, demonstrating professionalism

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to stay focused

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks

  • Intermediate computer skills with a knowledge of excel

  • Professional telephone etiquette
