About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.
 
Position Deputy Director, Division of Education and Training

Description

Function:

The Deputy Director will work with the Director of Education and Training and have both internal and external facing responsibilities, ranging from project and relationship management; ensuring that education, training, and consulting activities are of the highest quality, and are delivered on time and in accordance with relevant contracts, grants, and other types of agreements, to administration and human resources; including staff supervision, program planning and implementation, development of materials grant applications and other Fenway Health leadership responsibilities as required. The Deputy Director will partner closely with the Director to chart the Education Division's future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization's services. The Deputy Director may also be able to serve as a clinician one day per week within Fenway Health.

Representative Duties:

Project Development, Implementation, and Client Relations/Management:

  • Structure and lead teams to deliver outstanding work: provide direct supervision to the Program Managers and Program Coordinators, and coordinate/delegate team activities
  • Ensure that the requirements of the division's contracts and grants are met, including those for the National LGBT Health Education Center, the Coordinating Center for Technical Assistance, the NYC Health + Hospitals Project, and the HIV Prevention and Linkage to Care for Transgender Racial and Ethnic Minorities Project
  • Plan, implement and evaluate Division activities

Management of the Division and partnership with the Director:

  • Partner with the Director in essential internal organizational leadership activities (human resources, administration, scheduling and organizational planning).
  • Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.
  • Act as staff mentor, coach; be a visible, approachable sounding board/resource
  • Maintain effective and timely communication with the Director regarding Division activities, priorities, needs, and challenges

Facilitate External Communications:

  • Identify and recruit external content experts to develop and participate in webinars, online trainings, technical assistance and consulting, and other training and education tools and delivery methods
  • Develop and maintain communication systems with funders, including conference calls, written reports, and in-person meetings
  • Represent the Education Division at conferences, professional associations, and other public venues.
  • Develop thought leadership around specific topics/emerging practice areas.
  • Share in knowledge dissemination, reporting, and communications. Build and maintain strong program and sponsor relationships;

Facilitate Internal Communications:

  • Build and sustain relationships with other Fenway departments such as Communications, Development and Human Resources.
  • Represent the division at 'All-Staff' and The Fenway Institute meetings and trainings

Participate in Education Division Activities

  • Collaborate with program staff and faculty to write and edit a variety of written materials, including grant applications, reports to funders, health care briefs, consumer education materials, etc.
  • Develop content and update training materials as literature and best practices evolve.
  • Implement trainings including delivering virtual and on-site training for health care settings.

Meet agency participatory expectations

  • Work cooperatively with other FH departments to facilitate activities of The Fenway Institute
  • Adhere to all agency and departmental policies and procedures
  • Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities as requested
  • Adhere to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality
  • Adhere to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identify potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and take measures to rectify the situation
  • Attend all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings
  • Maintain professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities
  • Maintain and provide agency with records of continuing education activities
  • Serve on agency committees and in professional organizations when requested

Perform related duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility

Direct supervision of the Program Managers and Program Coordinators as assigned.

Position Requirements

Requirements:

    • MD or PhD in a related field strongly preferred
    • Advanced degree required
    • At least 5 years of management experience
    • Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities
    • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people from diverse backgrounds
    • HIV-related and LGBT health experience preferred
    • Strong communication, writing and editing skills
    • Knowledge of and sensitivity to diverse communities, particularly communities of color and LGBT communities
    • Ability to travel as needed
    • Experience working with an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse work staff preferred
