POSITION SUMMARY: BASIC FUNCTION

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a key member of the Critical Facilities Engineering & Design team and a significant contributor to the data center implementation and operation effort. This person will work directly with the other discipline professionals and technical support individuals. Integral with this role will be direct technical support for Design, Construction, Commissioning and Critical Facility Operations.

The ideal candidate will be a creative problem solver with excellent communication skills and attention to detail while maintaining high quality standards with careful consideration of cost and feasibility factors. This person must possess mature engineering judgment to meet project requirements and objectives and be able to work well with a diverse interdisciplinary team focused on creating and maintaining the best data center environments possible. Regular attendance is essential for satisfactory performance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports Critical Facilities Engineering & Design in defining mechanical system design requirements for multiple, simultaneous datacenter projects for new and modified data center facilities.
  • Supports management in the gathering of internal mechanical system design requirements and delivering solutions that both satisfy internal and external customer's needs and meet plant interface requirements.
  • Provides design guidance to contracted engineering resources.
  • Checks the work of contracted engineers and designers for accuracy and conformance to RagingWire requirements.
  • Provides RagingWire specific project design information to contracted engineers and designers based on RagingWire historical experience, NTT NexCenter Standards, and RagingWire product offerings.
  • Provides engineering support to the material procurement effort, both OFCI and Contractor Purchased.
  • Provides technical support and Quality Control of engineering design implementation during construction.
  • Supports critical facilities operations with system re-design where appropriate, incident management resources, system operational guidance, engineering policies and procedures, maintenance support, and equipment troubleshooting.
  • Serves in a lead role for design oversight of contract engineering resources of mechanical systems on multiple (possibly simultaneous) projects, including oversight of necessary calculations, drawings and specifications, including Conceptual Design, Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Document efforts.
  • Oversees and supports as-built drawings and other documentation for substantially complete projects.
  • Provides direct technical support to the Critical Facilities Operations team including incident recovery assistance.
  • Prepares project specific design work plans, schedules and budgets for CF Engineering & Design resources including attending and leading project team meetings
  • Conducts code analysis reviews.
  • Keeps mechanical design and other project support on schedule and within budget.
  • Participates in commissioning activities for projects being placed in service.
  • Provides mechanical system analysis as required to support design concepts.
  • Maintains mechanical system design requirement documents.
  • Manages and complies with the change control process.
  • Continuously evaluates and improves mechanical system efficiency.
  • Functions on-call to respond to emergency situations at the data center.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • In depth knowledge of critical data center mechanical equipment and design including: Large Centrifugal Chillers, Cooling Towers, Heat Exchangers, Pumps, Water Treatment Systems, HVAC equipment, Computer Room AC Units (CRACs), Operating Building Management and Industrial PLC Control Systems, Emergency Standby Diesel Generator Systems, Air handling equipment, Valves, Piping, Ductwork, Storm and sanitary drains, Industrial and domestic water.
  • High level of competence and familiarity with power and energy calculations, particularly as they relate to data center operations.
  • Adept and practiced at fluid flow and heat transfer calculations including approach temperature, small temperature difference, sensible load, latent load, NPSH, pump and fan affinity laws, pressure loss, fan and pump heat, kW/Ton, EER, IPLV, and suchlike.
  • Ability to perform psychrometric calculations and develop system state points and processes including use of wet bulb temperature, dewpoint temperature, dry bulb temperature, and enthalpy.
  • Familiar with (TMY3) weather files and binning calculations.
  • Familiar with control methods and hardware including signal types, data communication protocols for Building Automation and Control networks, actuator types, failure modes, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and control tuning methods.
  • Thorough knowledge of International Mechanical Code requirements and knowledge of related building codes, standards and regulations including California Title 24, ASHRAE, ASME, Life Safety, IBC, NFPA and OSHA.
  • Familiar with Uptime Institute Tier Ratings and TIA-942 requirements.
  • In depth knowledge of system sequence(s) of operation (SOOs) for complicated systems with multiple functions.
  • Experience with field construction and maintenance including working clearances, leakage prevention, flashing, and structural pipe and ducting supports.
  • Operating engineering experience with large mechanical systems including BMS trending, off-normal operation, and transient analysis.
  • Skilled to supervise and train a group of other engineers and technical professionals.
  • Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities, with skill to incorporate the best ideas into RagingWire designs.
  • Ability to provide engineering support of new design concepts through construction and operation.
  • Familiar with (NPV) life cycle cost analyses. Ability to develop Total Cost of Ownership reports for procurement analysis.
  • General understanding of Electrical, Civil, Structural and Architectural design including generator loading, failure scenarios, transient recovery and preventing cascading failures.
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal and management skills.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Powerpoint, Outlook, MS Project, drafting software (ACAD and/or Revit).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including: Feeders, Transformers, and Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, STS units, PDU units, Chillers, Air handling units and CRAC units.
  • Ability to prioritize work efficiently, with good team orientation.
  • Able to maintain information and data in a secure and confidential manner.
  • Ability to work in a high stress, fast-paced environment effectively.
  • Ability to demonstrate computing skills that show complex data trending/tracking and analysis.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field required.
  • Professional engineering license (with ability to get registered in states where RagingWire facilities exist or are planned.
  • Five or more years of experience as outlined above, preferably in a data center environment or critical environment (hospital, power plant, etc.)
  • Experience with large scale technical operations
  • Experience with vendor negotiation and management
  • Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling
  • Familiarity and competence regarding ASHRAE TC 9.9 publications including PUE, ASHRAE Recommended Temperature and Humidity Limits, Data Center Controls, Containment, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily sitting with some walking, standing, and bending.
  • Able to hear and speak into a telephone.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Office environment with extensive daily usage of a computer.
  • Field work in mechanical and electrical infrastructure rooms, data floor spaces, outdoor and roof mounted equipment.
  • Data center environment with loud noises and changing temperatures.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel required up to 35% of the time.
  • Must possess a current, valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Must be comfortable working in a highly critical, fast paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations at the data center.
  • Carry a cell phone to be available in emergency situations.
  • Must be willing to work outside normal business hours at times, including weekends, late nights, and holidays
  • Extended hours may be significant at times
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emails after hours in the event of an emergency, and at times during extended hours.
