We’re looking for an Associate Editor for our vibrant newsroom. The position touches every one of our editorial products, including our flagship newspaper, Banker & Tradesman. You’ll work hand-in-hand with the Associate Publisher on planning issues, working with contributors, copyediting and interacting with our sales and marketing teams. This is a good entry-level job for someone with strong editing skills, great organization and a command of AP style.

Position Requirements

The Associate Editor reports directly to the Associate Publisher.

Essential Responsibilities (not limited to):

Summary: Under direction of and in conjunction with the Associate Publisher, responsible for overseeing and managing the creation, aggregation, procurement and publication of editorial content for The Warren Group’s newspapers and web outlets.

From daily email news roundups to special sections, the Associate Editor will work with a team of writers, editors and contributors to ensure all publications meet the highest company and journalistic standards on a consistent basis. Includes the following functions:

  • Participating in start-to-finish production of the newspapers, including interactions with freelance writers and contributors, compilation of editorial content, copy editing, layout, design ideas, proofing and coordination with colleagues on final proofing;
  • Copy editing for accuracy, style, grammar, punctuation, etc., as well as writing headlines;
  • Performing other editorial duties related to newspapers and special sections;
  • Uploading newspaper content to the websites;
  • Responsible for overseeing two content-rich and dynamic websites;
  • Writing and producing two daily news e-mails to two separate audiences, and more than 20,000 total subscribers, in Massachusetts and Connecticut;
  • Engaging readers on social media;
  • Monitoring user experience, engagement and metrics for websites;
  • Requires full-time work performed during the company’s days and hours of operation;
  • Must have and maintain valid driver’s license;
  • Some off-site travel required;
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with InCopy, Adobe Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements helpful, basic knowledge of digital photography, proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of applications, industry-related and internal proprietary software;
  • Possess strong Internet skills for researching, producing and publishing material Must have an understanding of the social media universe; experience with Google, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn;
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to assist in producing compelling stories that are factually correct, creative, clear and concise. Demonstrable grammar skills;
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, legal procedures and governmental regulations. Superior ability to write and edit content for publication. Ability to effectively communicate information to, as well as respond to questions from, internal managers, customers and the general public;
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment;
  • Able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events and still meet deadlines;
  • Must have superb time-management ability, including the ability to complete work assignments while working remotely;
  • Demonstrable online content management experience.

Work Schedule: Normal full-time work schedule will be Monday through Friday during regular business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at The Warren Group’s office in Peabody, though it may vary to accommodate attendance at off-site meetings and events. Position will require occasional travel. Potential for partial telecommuting.
