About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.
Position Recovery Coach

Under the supervision of the Addictions Recovery Coordinator and utilizing the Recovery Coaching Model, the Recovery Coach will provide peer recovery support services to individuals struggling with substance use who are enrolled in the Addiction Recovery and Wellness Program and/or the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program. The Recovery Coach will facilitate connection to community resources, all levels of addiction treatment and recovery support, and any services required to achieve total wellness. The Recovery Coach will act as a motivator, ally, role model, collaborative problem-solver and advocate through knowledge of personal recovery and ability to adeptly negotiate recovery systems and culture to most effectively serve patients all along the motivational continuum.

Representative Duties:

  1. Provide Recovery Coaching services to individuals enrolled in the Addiction Recovery and Wellness Program/Primary Care MAT program who are seeking peer recovery support.
  • Provides services to patients who are diagnosed with substance use disorder to provide intensive services to promote and support engagement in services
  • Interacts with patients in office and non-traditional settings (home visits, community locations, hospitals, other program sites)
  • Provides high level of support to ensure barriers to services and wellness are mitigated
  • Meet with patients to establish personal recovery goals
  • Serve a liaison between formal an informal supports to facilitate care coordination
  • Work closely with all members of the treatment team to support treatment plan
  • Advocate for patient’s needs as they negotiate the healthcare and social service delivery system
  • Monitor patient’s progress and adapt approach as needed so that interventions remain patient centered
  • Provides on-going support to clients as appropriate and conducts outreach to help retain patients in care or to encourage patients to utilize additional necessary services
  • Uses Motivational Interviewing to assess readiness and preparedness to change and use motivational enhancement to increase motivation to pursue change
  • Assists patients with addressing and mitigating social determinates of health that are barriers to wellness and recovery
  • Forms productive, empathic working relationships with assigned patients
  • Meets established service delivery targets
  1. Performs and completes administrative tasks in a timely and efficient manner:
  • Maintain accurate and up to date clinical records
  • Writes case notes for each client interaction
  • Participates in staff and team meetings and conferences
  • Participates in professional activities to maintain professional standing
  • Participates in program reporting and accountability as required by funding agencies
  1. Meets agency participatory expectations:
  • Suggests and participates in continuing quality improvement efforts
  • Adheres to all agency and departmental policies and procedures
  • Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities as requested
  • Adheres to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality
  • Adheres to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to rectify the situation
  • Attends all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings
  • Attends all regularly scheduled research meetings, trainings, forums and pertinent FCH staff meetings
  • Maintains professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities; maintains and provides agency with records of continuing education activities
  • Serves on agency committees and in professional organizations when requested

Position Requirements


  • High school diploma
  • Demonstrated use of skills to maintain continuous personal recovery of two or more years
  • Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) desired at hire, but must be obtained within three months of hire
  • Graduate of DPH/BSAS Recovery Coach Academy desired at hire, but must be completed within three months of hire
  • Thorough knowledge of Recovery Coaching Model and ability to apply this knowledge to individualize treatment plans
  • Prior experience as a CARC and experience working with people who have substance use and behavioral health diagnoses preferred
  • Understand and endorse SAMHSA’s 10 principles of Recovery
  • Ability and interest in working with patients utilizing a broad range of treatment approaches, such as medication assisted treatment, 12-step principals and harm reduction
  • Bilingual Spanish/English speaking strongly preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills
  • Ability to be an effective team member and remain accountable to team goals while working frequently off-site
  • Flexibility, adaptability, independence, and ability to multitask required
  • Experience working with an ethnically, culturally and racially diverse work staff preferred;
  • Experience with LGBTQ population preferred
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals required
  • Adheres to NASW Code of Ethics

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to meet the following physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations:
  • Sit at a computer station for extended periods of time

  • Ability to make community visits, travel regularly in the local service area and work in non-office settings
