Description

The Public Relations and Outreach Specialist is responsible for driving the food bank’s outreach and awareness building efforts in the community through relationships with the media and other key public influencers. The role will help the food bank elevate its organizational image and level of visibility by building and nurturing a strong network within relevant nonprofit, government, and business sectors, and executing an effective media engagement program.

The Public Relations and Outreach Specialist must thrive in a fast-paced environment and possess excellent judgement and time management skills. The ideal candidate is a self-starting strategic thinker who demonstrates the spirit of creativity and resourcefulness that a nonprofit environment demands, and who focuses on both relationships and metrics to accelerate results.

Essential Functions:

  • In consort with existing communications plan, build out and execute roadmap for securing placements in high level print, broadcast, and online media
  • Stay apprised of daily news cycles, constantly monitoring and flagging stories and trends that present opportunities to garner positive public attention for the food bank, and making appropriate recommendations regarding media engagement strategy surrounding them
  • Maintain a strong understanding of organizational program developments and other news, events, and activities that could provide relevant story angles for media outlets
  • Develop and pitch story ideas to media and other relevant contacts
  • Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new contacts with those covering relevant business and industry developments
  • Identify and build relationships with thought leaders, including key online influencers, to grow organizational awareness
  • Manage media inquiries and interview requests
  • Assist in briefing and preparation of team members to be interviewed by media, and manage coordination for media events
  • Create content for and distribute press releases
  • Work with team members to improve and maintain resource areas for media on the web and other relevant channels
  • Identify, pursue, and secure relevant speaking opportunities for food bank executives and other team members as appropriate, including conference panels and keynotes (locally and nationally), receptions, awards ceremonies, etc.
  • Monitor, analyze and communicate PR metrics and results on a monthly and quarterly basis, and as needed
  • Coordinate with relevant team members on the planning and execution of CAFB media and other public relations events both on and off site
  • Evaluate opportunities for media partnerships, sponsorships, and advertising placement on an on-going basis
  • Perform other duties as assigned
 
Position Requirements
  • BA/MA degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications or a related discipline
  • 5+ years working experience in public relations

Other Skills/Abilities:

  • Proven track record designing and executing successful public relations campaigns
  • Strong relationships with both local and national business and industry media outlets
  • Experience in acting as a company spokesperson; comfortable and skilled in both broadcast and print media interviews
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Strong ability to gather, analyze, and use available data related to the food bank’s media to drive measurable outcomes
  • Solid experience with social media including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Strong familiarity with hunger, food insecurity, and broader related fields highly desirable
  • Experience planning media events a plus

Physical requirements:

  • Physical activities involve sitting for 80% of the work day.
  • Occasionally lifts office supplies up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to sites, as needed, throughout the metropolitan area.

Work Environment:

  • Normal business office, with frequent tight deadlines
  • Work may take place in the distribution center, or at community organizations
  • Regular work hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm; with weekends or extended hours for special events.
