Limits of Authority:

Able to implement with little supervision the standards mandated by Head Start Program Performance Standards.

SUMMARY

Works directly with children diagnosed with moderate to severe disabilities in the classroom, implementing goals and objectives of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) under the direction of the Special Education Coordinator and/or the Disabilities Services Specialist.

Assist in achieving the agency’s vision, “For Those We Serve,” by empowering individuals who thrive as healthy, self-sufficient and contributing members of our communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assists the Teacher and the Special Education Coordinator in providing full inclusion into a regular preschool classroom for children with moderate to severe disabilities.

Follows day-to-day direction by classroom Teacher regarding daily lesson plans, classroom schedules, and activities.

Works with Teacher, parent and Special Education staff in providing developmentally appropriate activities outlined in the child’s IEP.

Cooperates with classroom staff, Mental Health staff and Special Education staff in implementing appropriate behavior management techniques for identified children with disabilities.\

Assists the child with toileting or other personal care as needed during class time.

Attends ongoing training regarding child development and various disabilities.

Adheres to the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA-2010) which prohibits discriminatory actions towards children and/or adult with disabilities. In particular, children with disabilities are enrolled in the classroom as mandated by Federal Law.

Maintains strict compliance with universal precautions in the classroom.

Maintains strict confidentiality of records and information on Head Start staff, children and families.

Travels for agency business using personal/agency vehicle.

Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.

Works evenings and weekends as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

To execute this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE:

Head Start volunteer exp. preferred.

Experience to include knowledge of:

Basic Child Development

Should have a desire to:

Work with children with disabilities or some experience preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Bilingual in English/Spanish or other language preferred.

Physical examination, TB screening clearance and signed federal criminal record declaration are required within 7 days after employment.

Fingerprint clearance under Title 22 regulations, and criminal record statement, background checks as needed, and reference checks are required prior to employment.

Former Head Start/Early Head Start parents preferred.

Employment in Head Start is contingent upon approval of the Policy Council.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
