Program Statement:
The Catholic Commission of Summit County under the leadership of the Social Action Office of the Diocese of Cleveland seeks to shape a more caring society and a more peaceful world through justice education, advocacy, and community development. Our work is based on the call of the Gospel to work for the respect and dignity of all human life, the elimination of poverty, to speak out against injustice, and to promote the common good. The Commission seeks to provide opportunities for Catholics to live out their faith with purpose and incorporate the vision of the Social Action office with parishes and community groups in Summit County.
Job Summary:
Under limited supervision, direct, manage, supervise, and administer activities of the designated area diocesan social action office. Facilitate activities advocating social action and justice to carry out the Roman Catholic Church's mission for systemic change for the poor and disenfranchised in designated area. Ensure that the activities of this position and relevant programs are consistent with the mission, vision and values of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Cleveland.
Research, identify, and analyze social justice issues within the context of Roman Catholic Social Teaching to determine the impact of issues. Implement and administer programs to carry out the social mission of the Roman Catholic Church, providing advocacy for just and equitable change in local, state, and national institutions.
Maintain and update knowledge regarding latest legislative activity at local, state and national levels through appropriate communication with legislators and develop and maintain a legislative network.
With the assistance of an advisory board and designated committees, work with area parishes to initiate and develop programs that assist parishes and organizations in identifying their own social action needs and aids in formulating effective response. Provide education, resources and opportunities for networking and coordination of efforts among parish social action groups
Work with and support other DSAO staff as appropriate including developing educational materials and recommended action steps through forums, presentations, newsletters, workshops, bulletins, and seminars.
Identify and build productive relationships with community leaders, potential sponsors and funders to positively enhance the mission and objectives of the Social Action Office particularly with social action groups, service agencies and advocacy organizations to develop cooperative programming to address social justice needs in Summit County.
Develop a strategy for fundraising including an annual dinner, identifying potential sponsors and funders and other events as needed.
