This role is responsible for (1) managing all accounting and financial processes for the multi-state nonprofit organization; (2) ensuring timely, accurate and relevant financial and management information is developed and disseminated on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis to support effective management; (3) developing and maintaining processes that comply with Title 2 CFR 200 and individual state reimbursement requirements; and (4) leading various process improvement projects for the Accounting team. This is accomplished through the following:


  • Recruit, develop and retain a competent and productive team.
  • Establish clear expectations for excellence in accounting by creating and managing department key performance indicators / metrics to hold team accountable to a high level of performance.
  • Lead through continuous improvement to ensure optimal processes and controls are in place and aligned with SAFY’s objectives.
  • Develop and maintain written procedures for the standardization of financial processes, including daily processes and periodic management reports.

Financial Processes:

  • Lead all nonprofit accounting functions of the multi-state organization including month-end close, financial statement preparation/quality review, consolidations, inter company expense reconciliation, and balance sheet reconciliation.
  • Month-End Close to ensure on-time close performance and highly accurate financial statements across 7 operating companies and more than 80 individual programs
  • Oversight and leadership of company’s accounts payable process
  • Leadership and oversight for Payroll Processes, including Processing, Posting, Validating, Reconciling and Reporting of the Payroll General Ledger and Bank Account
  • Ownership of the Chart of Accounts, including processes to add new accounts as needed to capture the necessary detail required to meet various internal and external reporting requirements

Financial Systems:

  • Identify management information system needs, coordinate system development and identify critical performance measures
  • Ensure accuracy and GAAP compliance of transaction data


  • Establish, modify, document, and coordinate the implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures in accordance with GAAP.
  • Responsible for the preparation of all accounting and regulatory financial statements.
  • Responsible for monthly and annual closings, as well as preparation of required audit work papers.
  • Lead the preparation and facilitate financial statement audits, agreed upon procedure audits, state agency compliance audits, and internal compliance requests.
  • Responsible for all statutory reporting and contact involving financial performance (e.g. Cost Reports) to external stakeholders and funding sources.
  • Ensure basic accounting principles are followed and periodically review and assess industry standards.
  • Oversee the preparation of all required state and federal tax filings and documents.

External Stakeholders:

  • Serves as the principal liaison between the organization and external auditors and agencies responsible for financial audits.
  • Maintains current industry knowledge through association memberships, annual meetings, etc.
  • Establishes and maintains banking arrangements and procedures.
Position Requirements

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business required. CPA and Microsoft GP Certification preferred.

Experience: 5+ years accounting management experience in a nonprofit or health care organization.
